Saw on the rotax list where it was said Penzoil 2- cycle oil goes bad in
about a year on the shelf. Any one else heard that, and is there any truth to it?

Pennzoil must be pretty sensitive. Wink

I had a couple two or three gals of Wal*Mart TCW3 two cycle oil left
over from my last two stroke in the MKIII that melted down Sep 1993.
Couple years ago I off loaded it on james tripp so he could break in
his new 503 on his new FSII. He did just that, plus flew all over
Hell's half acre, including Labhart Field, KY, before it was Labhart
Field. James went right through that batch of oil and, as far as I
know, he is still burning up all the Wal*Mart TCW3 oil he can get his
hands on. That old oild was about 12 or 13 years old when I gave it
to James.

I would think Pennzoil would last about as long as I will.

I prefer to use the motorcycle race oils ( golden spectrum ) as thy do not carbon up the cylinders as bad as the cheep 2 stroke outboard oils.

Rick/All,

I've run Pennzoil AIR COOLED 2-stroke in all my engines. Never a
problem. I don't consider it a 'cheap 2-stroke' oil tho.

Rick,

I dont mean to be ugly but if you read my question above you will see you
did not answer my question. I did not mean to start an oil war. I just am
trying to find out if it is true that Pennzoil goes bad after sitting on a
shelf for a year or so. It seems to me if it had a shelf life it should have a
warning on the bottle. PLEASE This is not a debate which oil is best!

Hi Ed,
Sorry if it seemed like a debate!
I've never heard of a shelf life for any oil, organic or synthetic.

Ed, Rick, et. al....
Since I have had such unique success in using Pennziol Air Cooled (note
caps) in the mighty
447, I feel moderately... ok, distantly and weakly, qualified to comment....

I have it on good authority..... a person who knew a person who was in the
same county with a person who attended the
Rotax 2-stroke seminar at Sebring a couple of months back.... That no less
than Phil Lockwood, the east-coast Rotax
magnate, in his 2-stroke seminar.... made remarks to the effect that
Pennziol air cooled would indeed deteriorate in the plastic bottle if left
in storage too long... and that "too long" could be assessed by the
condition of the plastic bottle... The Gentleman is reported to have
opined that if the sides of the yellow plastic bottle showed evidence of
beginning to collapse inward... it was time to run that oil in your
weed-whacker, but NOT your mighty Rotax...

That's the way it was relayed to me the weekend after the seminar... that's
all I know about it...

Worth what ye paid fer it...

Beauford, The Aluminum Butcher of Brandon, FL
FF #076
About $43 per Rotax-flight -hour at this point by my calculations.... high
point of my life... I love 'em....
