I am getting to the point of wiring, and was interested in hearing if anyone has tried any "unconventional" locations for the headset jacks.
I would call anywhere in the panel, or directly under it, conventional locations. Unconventional ideas might be behind the seats, more or less under or above the shoulder harness locations, or perhaps in the aft inclined part of the center console, or ??
So, who's tried what? And how has it worked out?
Thanks,

Hi Andy,
I'll not flying yet but I've put mine between the seats on the aft inclined part of the center console. Seems to work so far, the headset wires don't seem to get in the way as much as having the jacks up front. I had space for the jack wiring in the conduit I ran under the canopy rail.

I don't have my plans handy so I don't know the part # but I saw a picture of an install of the headphone jacks in the flat gusset like pieces that are at the base of the top skin support hoop.

At first I put mine centered behind the seats because it looked right. It
was not as good as behind the passenger seat since it is much easier for the
pilot to reach this during flight. Hence I moved mine behind the passenger
and it works out much better. Also when entering and exiting the cabin the
jacks are out of the way as you will tend to use the center as a hand
support spot at this time.

HI
MINE ARE BEHIND SEATS, IN BAGGAGE COMP IN THE MIDDLE.. THIS GIVES ME LOTS OF HEADSET CORD AND I CAN GET TO THEM. I USED TO FLY A KATANA DA20, AND THAT IS WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED AND I LIKED IT.

Spruce has some nice recessed panels that holds 4 jacks and fit on the sloping panel at the rear of the center console. Take a look at AS&S p/n 11-01939, 11-01940 or 11-01941:
http://aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/micphonejack.php
If for some reason you only want two jacks look at 10-01595, 11-01120, 11-01130, 11-01140, 11-01150 or 11-01160:
http://aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/jack_hous.php
If you flip any of these around they give you a nice protruding "bump" that allows you to mount jacks on a surface and have the cords somewhat parallel to the surface.

Andy,
I installed my phone jacks where shown on the attached photo. I have not flown with this setup as yet, so I can't comment on "how it worked out." i have caught some flack from some who think that elbows will damage the plugs when they are in place. If that actually happens, I guess I will install some sort of guard around them.

Andy,
I made a jack-box and placed it behind the passenger seat with it angled
toward me. I also put a speaker on the opposite side with a switch to
listen to ATIS while doing preflight. The headsets and wires stay back
out of the way and it's a comfortable way for me to access headsets for
both passenger and myself.
Very happy with the results.

I heard that breaks up the radar return and reduces your signature.

I attached a 90 degree angle with the jack pickups installed onto the 6B12-5 lower instrument panel gussets. This location works,
BUT I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT and I would place them somewhere else if I were to do it again.
The pickups are easy to locate for the pilot and pass to install the headset jacks, BUT.................
My knees (and passengers also) are in that area, and sometimes make contact with the jacks.
If you do not remove the headset jacks before exiting, you can easily catch the wires with you foot,
If you have the headsets jacks installed before you get in, you also can easily catch the wiring with your foot.

I put mine right at the front outside corners of the baggage shelf in the gusset. They work very well there, the cords are completely out of the way, but I can't easily reach them in flight and I had to cut an opening in my plywood seat back supports to allow room for the plugs to stick up there. If I were doing it again, I would put them a bit further back and maybe at an angle away from the seat back and I would make the seat backs a little narrower there to allow room to reach the cords.
