Klaus,
For those of us building XLs (with flaps), what do you think would be the effect of adding only the forward part of the wing root fairings?

Hi,
1. The question about efficiency of the forward portion of the wingroot
fairing
relative to the rear portion is difficult to answer.
My guess is that much of the improvement in
low speed behavior (minimum sink rate, stall speed, climb rate with high
payload)
comes from the rear portion, since it reduces the amount of induced drag.
The front portion reduces the extent to which the air above the wing
gets compressed by the expanding fuselage.
Thus, these are really different effects. For details,
see the paper "Finding Hidden Drag" listed on the website
http://www.utdallas.edu/~klaus/Airplane/wing_root_fairing.html
2. If I were building an XL, I would forget about flaps altogether and
instead
would add fixed trailing edges and the wing root fairings.
This would eliminate the flap mechanism entirely.
Maybe, just maybe, somebody will make fairings for the XL, then make
molds, and
make additional fairings available to others at reasonable expense. It would
be a nice modification.
Best wishes,
Klaus

I have had my zodiac 601 UL from Feb. this Year and found the plane to glide like a rock and fly with a nose high attitude ,also the stall speed I found somewhat high . after reading Klaus's report on the Wing-root fairings and the phenomenal numbers of improvement on his HDS i could not wait to try it so weaponed with a roll of ductape I went to the airport and made fairings on the front part of the wing-root (works like magic) and went flying , the airplane is NOT the same anymore , she fly's like all the (Canadian 1232 lb max) ultralights I have been flying with a level attitude (I can now see over the nose ) specially on landing because we have a much better glide ,I have had not a lot off time to test all exact numbers ,but think Thad stall speed has not much changed yet(no fairing on back part of wing YET ) I LOVE MY REBORN PLANE !! and can hardly wait to bring out the fiberglass and make the fairings permanent Thanks Klaus for your research . if any of You guy's have experience with wing-root fairing please let me know . Ron Smit,
I made fibreglas wing root fairings ten years ago. Somewhat like a
Spitfire. Found the biggest effect was on climbout (better) and less
turbulence on the horizontal stab/elevators.
Will send a picture if you send me your email.
