Hi Group,
As I'm building my wings, I'm getting to the point of ordering and installing the Dynon remote compass EDC-10a.
Has anybody experience with this and advice and pictures, thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
hans

Hans,
I put mine in the tail area, as far from steel as I could.
I don't think the wing is a good idea as it needs special attention. You will see when you read the instructions from Dynon.

Mine is mounted in the Tail, Afterfxllc I would be worried about future interference from high voltage coils in the location behind panel.

Hans--
I have two of the compasses--one for a D100 and one for a D180. I originally mounted both units behind the instrument panel, however, I found that one of the was affected significantly by the cabling surrounding it, however, the other was unaffected. I then moved the disturbed unit to a mounting on the floor of the fuse behind the passenger seat and all works well now. I also found it very beneficial to use a digital level when installing the compass units. Sorry no pictures

That looks like a very problematic location for the remote magnetometer. Looks like there are a lot of high current and magnetic field producing stuff in the immediate area. Am I missing something in these photos?
Mine is in the tail behind the aft bulkhead of the baggage area.

We first thought it might be a problem and were prepared to move it but it tracks dead on with the vertical card frankly I was more worried about radio interference but everything works great. I like this setup because everything is so compact.

I WAS ORIGINALLY PUTTING MINE JUST UNDER THE STABILIZER, HOWEVER WHEN I USED MY HANDY DANDY ELECTRONIC LEVEL TO GET IT LEVEL, I MAGNETIZED THE STEEL CABLES TO THE ELEVATOR WITH THE MAGNETS IN THE BOTTOM OF IT.. THEN I HAD TO MOVE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FUSELAGE IN THE TAIL AND SEEMS TO WORK FINE.

Thanks for all your replies. Seems that the tail is a better place to mount the remote compass. That means that I can put off the purchase for a little longer.

You can, however download the installation instructions in advance to help you plan your mount.

One other location to avoid is around ferrous metals that could become magnetized overtime from
static or dynamic friction. I've seen heading splits between PFD's due to this very thing.

That sounds great. i would have been way too chicken to install it there. I'm taking for granted that the remote magnetometer and the vertical card compass are not simply duplicating each other's errors since they are situated very close to each other. You have probably checked their readings on a compass rose with everything turned on and running, right?

Hans,
I think there is another advantage to having the remote compass, you can add the outside air temperature probe. This is useful not only that you have a reading of the air temperature, but it also means that the airspeed will be corrected for altitude and temperature. By the way my remote head is in the back of the luggage rack.
