If you had been left at that, I'd not have taken it that way, but nevertheless the VG thread became, IIRC, one of the longest threads in the history of the list?

We all, of course, like to verify the other guy fits into his britches, but our work in that regard generally carries more weight when we still fit in our own before we begin.

Wink

As for pilotage and ded reckoning, I personally have never observed a case where a pilot who uses that mode as a primary method of navigation disqualifies him (automatically?) from making informed comments about suitable GPS's to a "newbie".
It would only be in case that pilot had no experience with the GPS, which I don't think is the case with the original commentator (the Baron?).

But that's just my impression from his comments, he didn't strike me as unqualified to make those remarks....

If I'm wrong of course, I stand corrected.

Vic, You can also get a cord that can be used to tie it into your EIS
or your fishfinder. Now that's versatility. Smile

How about the Garmin 96C vs the Airmap 600c ?
These are the same price. Which one is the better bang for the buck?

I can't answer that, but I do know that the 96 is very popular amongst the
hang gliding and paragliding crowd.

Ever try using a sectional in-flight in an Ultrastar.

The confetti effect must be quite amusing to see from the ground.

I like the PDA option because I CAN have sweet nothings whispered in my ear...except when I get the "terrain conflict" warning...the terrain always wins that argument.

I wonder what "mans best friend" thinks when Man decides to sit under an angry sounding, noisy, smelly, hot beast, a bunch of inches away from a many bladed meat cleaver, way high in the air with no place to escape.

Maybe animals are smarter than Man, they generally like to stay away from those things Wink

I fold my sectional into a plastic kneeboard and I have my GPS mounted on a bent piece of lexan that slides right over the kneeboard. I really like the GPS 96. It is pretty easy to read at the angle you see here. It is water proof and it will float. It last a long time on 2 AA nimh rechargables. I'd guess it would last 12 hours or more.

Cool....dog muffs!

I saw something really crazy at the Torrey Pines Glider port.

A guy took his dog a black Lab, Hang Gliding.

Had its own well designed harness and everything.....no reserve chute though.

The dog seemed to really enjoy it and I noticed it was also helping steer with its tail.....funny sight.

Mans best friend surely puts a lot blind faith in the Man ... and thats what makes dogs so great!

Hi Ray

Soaring with mans best friend is nothing new...
HG pilots have been going tandem with their pets for years....
I even know of a guy who fly's with his Pet Raptor... A Falcon I
believe...

The bird will actually land in the control frame while he's
soaring......

I bought a Lowrance 2000c at sun and fun for $482, and it has terrain awareness and works fantastic. best price was $682 then I found out that Lowrance takes ANY old aviation gps WORKING or NOT on trade in credit of $200, I went to the fly mart and bought a junk one for $19 and traded it in. Has a large color screen for the week eyed people like im becoming, large capacity down loadable and very simple operations, would recommend it to everyone.

Fly Safe,
Wade

Mark, According to what I've read about birds, their navigation system
is far superior to GPS. Smile
I only made the smart *** comment as a barb to those who change the
subject of an ongoing discussion, but not the subject title.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:20 pm    Post subject: Ultrastar Panel with GPS Reply with quote

Here is a picture of my UltraStar Panel.

Here is what is in the picture:
On the left a Dell Axim x50v PDA with GPS, I bought from ebay last week ($125) Still need a mouning bracket for it.

It has the free XC Soar moving map software with the terrain, roads, waypoints and airspace turned on.
Displays GPS Altitude, distance/course to next waypoint, ETE, ETA, Ground speed, bearing etc etc and is configurable.

In the middle a Stratomaster E1 engine monitor I bought last week($199) that comes to life when the engine is on and displays RPM, Hobbs Time(00:55), EGT, CHT and I am planning to adapt some of the other inputs to display fuel level as well.
It has settable alarms for all the temp and fuel readings and will flash the display and the little dummy light below the instrument on the panel if an alarm point is reached.
Its powered by a 9.6v 2400mah rechargable NiCad battery that should run it for at least 24 hours of on time.

On the right I have a Flytec 3005 Dual Altimeter and Variometer(Rate of climb) with audio, powered by internal AA bateries. ($225 on ebay)

Off picture is a Hall Bros. airspeed tube with disc.

More than enough info to keep track of things while enjoying the scenery.

All that light stuff has kept my Ultrastar a part 103 UL at only 246lbs.

Next I need to add some light wheel brakes, and found some small drum brakes online that should do the trick...probably 4 pounds worth.

Almost ready to go flying.

The pod with the ASI, altimeter, and engine instruments was on the plane
when I got it... I added the Garmin Geko 301 GPS (which I also use for
hiking and PPGing), compass (salvaged from a wrecked Cessna, no, I didn't
wreck it!), and Icom A24 radio (the antenna is mounted inverted underneath
the fuel tanks). You can't see the pitot/static tube but it sticks out
from the front of the pod. I'll probably add a Tiny Tach (just for the
hour meter and only because I have an extra laying around), but I'll
probably mount that near the engine since I don't need to see it in flight.
