New to this list, please excuse if topic came up before.

I have the 6 inch Matco Wheels/Brakes on my model 3 and also have a set of new "Tundra" 8 inch ATV tires (slick, big and fat).

I would like to switch to these big fat tires since my field is very rough.

Obviously, 8 inch wheels won't fit on the 6 inch Matco wheels, so my question is: What wheels do I need to get and what else do I need to change, if any?
Will my existing brakes work?

I heard something about ATV wheels but I don't have a clue as to what exact model to look at and how to make it work with my existing landing gear/axle/brakes (have the Grove Aluminum Gear).

Thanks for any advice.

Chris

I switched my 6" wheels on my Avid MK IV to 8" Kitfox wheels so I could use the 8" tundra tires also. I used a set of hubs from a Kitfox 3 and the 8" Mitchell wheels that came on the Kitfox 3s. I'm guessing that your Matco wheels have the bearings inside the wheel and don't have a seperate hub. I believe that is what was on my Avid to start with. The disc brake rotor fit both sets of wheels, I just swapped from one set to the other. The Kitfox hub needs more axle length than the Matcos.  I have another set of hubs for a Kitfox that I don't really need, but no extra 8" wheels. Hope this info helps (and is correct) Jim Chuk

What you will need is the original DOUGLAS ATV wheel to fit those large tires! I have two sets of the original hubs and bearings, plus the axles if your interested. Douglas has a web site just google you will find it. Let me know if your interested in my hubs and axles.

Chris,

I believe Matco now has 8" wheels. Contact them.

Chris:

An alternative is to keep the same wheels, and switch to higher diameter tires for the 6 inches wheel. You could use a 20 inches tall tire or even higher if desired.

Larry:

An alternative is 8.00-6. This tire is wider, and aproximately 20 inches tall as opposed to 16 inches on the regular 6.00-6 tire. On my ex-Kitfox, I had 8 inches wheels and used 6.50-8 aviation grade tires that were 21 inches tall (and very heavy). For sure, if you do a search in the internet you could find taller, non-aviation grade tires that could work. I don't remember what model is you Kitfox, but it is very common to use non-aviation grade tires on earlier/ligther models (I-IV). If you use bigger tires you would be trading off some speed. Hope this help.

Thanks Jose,

I found some 800 x 6 from Carlise. I'll try those. I haven't been able to find anything larger. The big boys - Super Cub guys consider 26" small and shoot for 31 or 35". Imagine the weight not to mention the cost on those!

Larry:

That alternative is cheaper than changing wheels, and provides additional cushion. Keep the list informed of the results!

Best Regards!

José
