Guys
FWIW, I hassled with the retarded throttle cable arrangement that came with the 701 kit for a while...didn't like fighting the full throttle springs all the time and never being able to keep the carbs in synch for long. Tried several different cable arrangements none of which were much more successful and the spring fight ever present...having to lock the throttle(vernier) everytime the throttle hand was needed for anything but pulling back hard on the throttle. BS.
I finally posted here and got several responses from others who were dissatisfied/made changes and ended up using a solid pushrod setup(no springs) suggested by I can't remember who but he knew what he was talking about when he said it solved all his throttle problems. Mine are gone too. Thank you and sorry I have misplaced your info.
This mod has made all the difference when flying this thing. The throttle is about like a C150 now and the important carb sync is no problem now. I have to wonder how many 701/601 with the stock cable arrangement are running around out of sync. While on the subject of carb sync-I bought the gauge setup from Lockwood which would be allright except that the gauges aren't dampened(oil filled or something similar) which causes them to twitch constantly(near impossible to adjust this out) and throws doubt on the results of the sync procedure. I have talked to others who have had this same problem. My set is for sale if anybody is interested. Like new. Used a couple times. No instructions-they went thru the prop. $50 bucks plus UPS to your house.
Joe
Merry Christmas all

Hi Joe,
We had been in touch about the rod system for the throttles.
Maybe you did install something similar to our system.
But no matter what, it's great to read that you got rid of the
the cable problem.
With regard to synchronization: With the rod system,
synchronization is not difficult. We did the following,
without any equipment:
We set the same opening for both throttles using the
idle control screw. Then we adjusted the rods so that
they both connected without any throttle adjustments on both
sides. As far as we have been able to tell, this produces
excellent synchronication, as is evident from smooth
idle performance at around 1,800 rpm with hot engine.
Mind you, going so low is not such a good idea, but
for a synchronization check it is worth trying out.
Another check is that both carburetors must go to full
throttle at the same time. Of course, at that point, the
throttle rods will be close to their most forward position,
but must not be at whatever other stops are imposed on
the rod movement.
We had originally a real problem with the idle mixture
adjustment, so I add a note on this, in case others
experience the same situation. Originally, the idle
was not smooth. We thought that this was simply
a feature of the engine. But then we doubted that,
and fixed the idle problem by turning the
adjustement screws so that, when feeling the exhaust
stream, the flow was very smooth. This is a process
we used way back, in the dark ages
of automotive repairs, when there was no electronic
equipment for tuning ignition or carburetors.
Anyway, once the mixture
was adjusted on both carburetors to give the smoothest
exhaust flow, we got the above mentioned 1,800 rpm
with little or no vibration. The message here is:
According to our experience, it may not be smart
to assume the factory sets the idle mixture on the
two carburetors correctly. At least in our case, it
was way off on one carburetor.
For anybody interested in the carburetor linkage we are using,
the details are shown at

Happy flying,
Klaus

Hi Joe,
I have been considering making the change you and Klaus have made. Would it be possible for you to post some pictures of your installation?
Thank You
Rick

Dr Klaus
I installed a similar setup to yours. Only difference was I used 3/16 chromoly rod instead of the aluminum tube...because that's what I had on hand. Works great...no more throttle aggravation. Thanks a lot.
