The AN hardware that attaches the wings, wing struts, tail feathers, etc. Is there a useful life for this hardware? My aircraft is about 7 years old.

Maybe there's some kind of info under army/navy bolts ???

Seems like if they show "wear" they could use replacing....

So far on mine....The a/n stuff looks good, the hole is what gets the wear.

This may be unusual, but on the right side horizontal leading edge support on my MK-3,I had looseness in that connection.I got rid of almost all of the slop by replacing the AN-3 bolt.It had wear where it contacted the stainless bracket. The bolts are tough but not hard.If you can feel or see wear, replace them.

G.Aman:

I believe most of the initial wear on AN bolts is loss of the cadmium plating. It acts as a protector and lube. It is pretty soft and wears off the bolts that get slippage and vibration.

Thanks John, never suspected that.A friend of mine used to mention helicopter grade bolts.Said they were different from normal AN hardware.Any truth to that?

Morning Gary:

Don't think their is any difference in grades of AN hardware used on fixed or rotary wing aircraft.

What your friend may have been talking about is close tolorance bolts. They are used more on rotary wing than fixed.

Wear is the primary parameter for replacement of AN hardware.

Looseness is an indicator as is any darkish accumulations around the joint(Vibration induced wear particles)

Keep in mind that you do not want to use sticky lubricants in any areas on an open aircraft like a Kolb because invariably dirt and grit will stick to the goo and act like sandpaper in your joints, and accelerate the rate of wear on your parts. Especially not on any hinges or parts of the control system.

Dry Lubes are the way to go where you can.

Just for fun, when you go the store to get some new AN hardware, ask to get you some of the really "Fresh" AN hardware that he keeps for special customers. Laughing
