I've been doing checkout with a used riding lawnmower battery, and now it's time to select one for flight.  I'm ok with a heavier batteries--would help to balance out my weight 



ZAC supplied a battery case with my kit that could hold a auto battery.  I have found batts in the 33Ah range for $70 to $90.



I would like to use a sealed battery.  Any thoughts on AGM or Gell?  I'm leaning towards the AGM, because the Gell has charging issues.

 I went with this battery and made my own battery tray. I got the fiberglass battery box with my kit.

IMOO, the gel cell battery is the way to go.  I used auto batts for the 

first two.  Fumes get at the aluminium, you need a sealed battery box with 

breather and if it does ever overcharge you have a real mess.

I then chose the Odessey.  Seven years later still working fine and the 

other big advantage is you don't have to keep charging it every month if you 

don't/can't go flying.  In the frozen north (Canada) it just sits there for 

3/4 months.  Twists the engine over just like new.  Yes, it costs twice as 

much - but guess what I put in the Spitfire.

I beleive Odessey are RG regenerative batteries not gell cells.   RG 

batteries are recomended by Bob Nuckolles of AeroElectric as they have a low 

internal resistance & are sealed, we have a17 AH fitted. cannot remember the 

make off hand but am sure it is RG.  Bob also said that Gell Cells give very 

poor performance when cold.

I spoke to a manufacturer (also can't remember who) when selecting a battery in 2006.  I remember concluding that AGM (abosorbent glass mat) had little potential for leak even if punctured, low resistance, and best performance in the cold.  I do also remember being warned that they don't hold up too well in a hot engine compartment.  Starting to remember also something about avoiding long term trickle charging, but not too confident I'm remembering correctly..  Been happy with mine (14AH? Geez, can't remember a thing) and it spins over a cold 912S with the original weak starter, from behind the lower hatch in the rear fuse.  Now if only the 912S charging system could actually charge it below cruise rpm with the lights and stuff on..
