All flying monwheelies,
I'm wondering about the advisability of protecting the rudder cables
from potential muck and moisture where they run through the wheel well
by encasing them in some kind of tubing.
Is there anyone out there who wishes they had?
Or anyone who regrets doing so, and if so, why?
Is anyone aware of any downside to doing so?
Or is this just another non-issue which might prompt the comment,
"Fred, just build the plane!" ?

Fred,
I used Nyloflow tubing to cover the rudder cables from the firewall to well aft of the wheel well. Since I'm not quite flying yet, I can't comment on the efficacy of the treatment.
Good building and great flying,
Bob Borger

Fred,
I and others have done same. Tube is attached to tunnel sides with P-clips. Have not had any problems and wouldn't expect any.

Fred,
I used Nyloflow and after 700 hours I haven't seen any down side. I
believe that is how it is done on the Long Eze's as well.
Cheers, Paul

Fred
You keep adding stuff and you won't make it to OSH this year or next! Mine
are per factory and after 7 years may have some dirt on them but are working
fine and are easy to inspect for corrosion etc.
If it's not broke why fix it?

Fred,
Even in Summer it's below freezing at high altitudes. Such a cable in a tube could contain water and freeze stuck.

Fred,
The cable in the tubing, even partly, will not be visible for inspection.
When using teflon tubing for lubrication without oil or grease, you cannot
avoid dust and sand entering the tubes and cause more wear inside.
If you land often in mud or when ploughing your private strip, wash it
regularily and inspect condition. A mud cap can be of interest over the
wheel.
Seasons greetings.

Fred, Nylaflow has worked perfectly for me x 6yrs. It's standard practice in
glider dating back to the invention of Nylaflow. Although there is an
inspection issue, my inspector (who is a professional glider repair
engineer), tells me that cable wear in the protected bits is significantly
less than in the exposed bits running over wheels or other bearing points.

Thanks guys for all the thoughtful comments to my query. As I still
have questions in my mind as to the exact path f the rudder cables and
potential clearance issues, I'm going to wait until I can trial fit
them before deciding about the nylaflow conduits. Without wanting to
prolong the subject, I gather that the cable guides and rubbing strip
would be altered or omitted entirely when conduit is used.

Fred, You still keep the rubbing strip and route the Nylaflow through the
guide in the wheel well (probably reducing the friction and certainly the
wear at this point). You leave a gap as the cable goes under the little
wheels. Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ
