As a fellow traveler who just turned 60, all us geezers fear what has happened to you or worse.
Though I do not know you personally, I relish seeing your posts. Please keep up the faith and your progress.
I will say a special prayer for a healthy 2008 for you and your family. We all need goals in life, I think that a realistic one for you is to get your a/c in the air and fly a lot of dual in 2008 and plan to go solo on a specific date in early 2009 (maybe 2/1/09).

Deems,
i gotta tell you, i personally think you shoulda told em you got a
bad mushroom out of the garden...
I wish you the best of luck, and hope i can continue to enjoy watching your
progress.
I have a friend who's back in the air in little over a year and a half after
having a heart attack and splints installed. if nothing else, it shows the
rewards of a good physician and lots of patients.
ALSO AS A SIDE NOTE, is it ME or does it seem that most contributing listers
have admitted to multiple marriages? I fear I may be unqualified to be an
rv10 builder being still on my first. Spending all the late nights in the
hangar i thought was good for a relationship because you couldn't disagree.
(hehe, i am on the right path aren't I??)
Merry Christmas

Over the past 2 1/2 years this list has grown to become my aviation family,
and so it's only fitting that I pause and THANK YOU all for the help and
support I've received from you and to wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY
NEW YEAR

Deems,
I'm so so sorry to hear about this turn of events. I truly hope there is a
silver lining in there for you somewhere.
You are definitely one of the core personalities on this list and it just
wouldn't be the same without you.
I hope you can find a way to continue on with your project. If for no other
reason than we really need at least one aircraft in the fleet sporting your
"5 foot tall pylon, made of spaceage transpardium mounted in the exact
center/top point of the cabin cover, equipped with a gyro stabilized gimble
that ensures stability of the antenna in all unusual attitudes."
But whatever you end up deciding to do next year, for this one please have a
wonderful Christmas!
Best Regards,
Patrick #40715 / N690CT

Deems - others have said it better than we can, but nonetheless, hang in there! We enjoyed meeting you at Oshkosh this summer, and continue to enjoy your posts. Keep 'em coming while you polish your -10.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!

Deems don't worry about stretching 1-2 months out to a year. When I thought I was a month away from being finished with my RV-10 project I found that I still had more than three months of almost full time work to get it to DAR inspection.
In addition, you can also use another pilot to do the fly off hours and still be involved with the daily cowl removal and adjustments that are needed.
I had another pilot listed on my insurance for the flyoff period and the insurance company didn't charge anything extra. My dream was for the two of use to get the flyoff done sooner so that I could fly to OSH2006. After getting my DAR approval I knew there was no way I was going to fly to OSH2006 unless I falsified my flyoff time so as it turned out I ended up doing all the flyoff time myself over a little more than a month.
Even 17 months after the first flight there are still things that I am changing, many of which would have already been done if I had been grounded from flying.
During my build, I had three major surgeries over a four month period and it was really hard to take the time off building to get well but man has the flying of N710RV been worth it.
Merry Christmas

I certainly hope the people like me who've been married twice aren't
in the majority. Hopefully for those building an RV-10, it won't
strain the marriage too much and CAUSE you to need a 2nd one. I can
see how that would happen to some people though.
For me, it was like night and day. Out with complete misery, but
in with my perfect match. I'd have never built a nice plane if my
life had continued it's previous course. But now I ended up with
a wife who's a perfect partner for most anything. She was involved
in almost every decision in building the plane, she helped and got
into the construction process, she enjoys the flying, and
she even did some of the work having the kids to fill the back seats.
For me, Christsmas or whatever your choice of holiday is, is about
the family, and the holiday, because I already have the presents
I need most....the wife and the kids.
If you're unmarried and seeking, and building a -10...my advice
is to find the right mate....one who will actually enjoy flying
with you. I think it could get pretty stressful owning such
a beautiful plane if it isn't something you can share.

Tim,
I'm not like you. I have not been married twice - I've been married three times. When I met my first wife, I owned a J-3 Cub. Our first date was in that airplane. But shortly after we got married she happened to see the bill for hangar rent and realized aviation was expensive. She said "Either that airplane goes, or I go." I made a mistake and sold the airplane. Should have just divorced her on the spot and saved myself 12 more years of misery.
After I divorced her, I started flying again and began building a Pietenpol Air Camper. While building it, I met and married my second wife. Shortly after we got married I bought a Cessna 140, and she fllew in it with me maybe 3 times before announcing she was terrified of flying. She resented the time I spent building the Pietenpol, but refused to get involved with the project. Eventually she ran off with a 28 year old (she was 40).
As I was finishing the Pietenpol I met a lady (whom I had no intentions of marrying) who seemed interested in the project. She helped me finish it and filmed my first flight in it. She likes to fly and convinced me to buy the RV-4 so we would have something faster than the 58 knot Pietenpol to travel in. Then when she realized how cramped the RV-4 is for travel, she agreed enthusiastically that we need an RV-10. I married her last year and she has been a huge help on the RV-10.
It took me three tries to find the right one, but once you find her it makes EVERYTHING better.
Merry Christmas to all on this list of friends!

Hey Deems -
Many have replied and said a lot, so I'll piggyback and second all that
was said... and I'll add that you are a real cool dude. You've helped
me a ton both on and offline. I like to pretend to trail-blaze, but
you're the man. Life throws curve-balls, but you're a persistent guy.
And I think perseverance is gonna do well for you in this situation.
Get better buddy, we're pulling for you!

I'd also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
It is really fun to get to the end of the year after a full year of flying your RV-10 and think about all the amazing places you saw due to the hard work of building it.
Oshkosh was a highlight for me and my wife, but the Bahamas were great, 16R at Van Nuys, PHX Nascar, breakfast at Driggs, branding in South Dakota, Red Bull Air Races in San Diego and Monument Vally, Nellis with Tim and Wayne are just a few amazing memories I have from this year. The plane is flying better than ever now. We have flown enough miles over the past 14 months to fly around the world twice.
Deems, this is just a thought, but you may want to let someone fly your plane when it is complete so that when you are back in saddle, the plane has all the bugs worked out. It really takes 100 hours and 6 months to get everything perfect. That first flight is great, but the real memories come from trips with family and friends. You may not want to delay that process. But only if you really really trust someone. I know everything will be fine with you and we will look forward to seeing you in the air soon. Sorry that had to happen but all things happen for a reason.

I'm still on wife number one after 27 years - guess I picked a keeper. But if it takes me another 3 1/2 years to finish, I guess I'll be flying the -10 solo!
cheers,
Ron
-187 finishing (but in the hangar now)
