Hi all,
I am looking for some ideas on a problem with my 914T. I had the
carburettors overhauled by Lockwood aviation and after reassembling it
I have a new problem.
I can get 34" of boost at 100% throttle setting on take off at 1000'
msl, but when I climb the maximum boost available decreases with
altitude. For example I get about 27" at 8,500', and 24" and 12,500.
So far I have checked the following:
- Reseated / checked the TCU cable connections to the air box
- Checked for leaks / tightness on the carburettors
- Checked to see if the waste gate cycles properly when the TCU is turned on
- Calibrated the throttle positions on the TCU with my laptop
I haven't disconnected to cable to the waste gate yet to check if I
can get full movement on the waste gate because its way too cold to
work in the hanger.
The next time the weather permits flying I was thinking of connecting
my laptop to the TCU and see what the parameters are saying. For
example if the air box temperature sensor is faulty the TCU might
interpret this as over temp and not allow the waste gate to close.
Anyhow, I would appreciate ideas on this. It may be that the
carburettor overhaul is unrelated, but I thought I'd mention it
because it was what had been changed in recent times.
Regards, Paul

I suggest you look into the end of the turbo and determine if the blades are spinning freely. I had a similar problem and it was stuck turbo blades. The solution for me was to get a twelve point socket and gently turn the turbo blades after spraying the area with mouse milk(a turbine bearing lubricant). It sound like you are getting some but not all of the turbo.

Paul, if you haven't already, check the hose clamp connection of the airbox
hoses to the carburetor. These hoses have a way of vibrating themselves
loose from the carburetor, thus causing the "boost" from the turbo to be
vented to the outside atmosphere. It happened to me 4 or 5 times until I
safety wired the airbox to the carburetors.

Further to Ken's advice I found a spray can product called "Blaster" works much better than mouse milk for freeing up stuck turbo wastegates and other internal parts. This product is sold in almost all auto parts stores here in the US.

Hi Paul
As far as limited boost on your 914 goes, first determine if the TCU is
opening the wastegate or if you have a physical problem. Cycle the
wastegate shut and turn off TCU and do a test to see if you can get max
boost, if you can let us know and we can go from there and troubleshoot
TCU. If it will not boost, it is a physical problem. Leak somewhere
between output of turbo and cylinders, (restricted intake????), or turbo
that is not spinning up fast enough due to binding, or problem with
impeller, make sure your wastegate is sealing AND CLOSING PROPERLY AND
FULLY, or could be a restricted exhaust.

I'm with ron on this one, If you have checked the electrical side of things
which
you say you have, then i would have a hard look at the exhaust side of
things
as your pressure drop appears to be fairly linear, i would say the turbo is
maxed out
boost wise the whole time which means it either dragging, soot build up in
the exhaust
turbine could drag the turbine enough to not allow it to fully "spool" up,
or you have
a restriction in a pipe somewhere. If you had the turbo off/apart or had to
"FLEX" something
to get it back on after the service, then you may be distorting the housing
enough to slow the
turbo down.
well thats my 2 cents worth for what it's worth
good luck
