If you are building a LSA Lightning like mine it's an E-LSA. Mine is insured by AIG, but I'm surprised that Falcon would not quote yours. Mine was the first Light Sport and only the 3rd Lightning to fly, and there was some hesitation at AIG. My Broker went through Falcon somehow to convince AIG. Sorry I don't have any details on how that came about. By now we have several Light Sport versions and no adverse history, so the insurers should be more comfortable.
Could Mark or Nick give us a LSA count?
Good luck getting that problem solved.

Also, I don't believe a true ELSA has to meet the 51% rule. It can even be over 95%.

I have seen a Lightning, but have not flown one yet. My wife and I hope to sit in and fly one tomorrow in AZ. I am having a problem with my wife's ideas of light aircraft. She want and high wing to keep the sun off and look down better. I need to get her in a Low wing A/C. Have you found the Lightning with the Jabiru 3300 is a good match and with low maintenance cost? I am just tired of dealing with the FAA medical issues, so my flying will be limited to LSA or Glider.

Buz just posted a thread about the low maintenance he had on his plane. It is an Esqual that tested many of the Lightning components and utilizes the same engine. He has over 400 hours now on his airframe and was very satisfied. I have quiet a few hours in type and never really had a problem out of the planes once they were rigged right and jetted properly. The Lightning is an exceptional and fun aircraft to fly as well as economical! It is very responsive. I have flown one nearly all the way across the country. Earl has set a world record in one and flown clear across the country and back. Buz has something like enough miles across the ground to circle the Earth a few times.
As far as the wife goes: tell her this one will get her there faster for the same fuel burn and therefore is cheaper. Several folks have painted the tops of the canopy similar to the diamonds to keep the sun off, and I gaurantee the low wing to be more fun. If you really did decide to go high wing though, check out that Jabiru 400. It's a longer build time, but you'll be seeing mid 150mph at 5.5 gph and the looks of a sleeker composite cessna. It also has a large baggage area and two back seats. Now if you want to go sport pilot the Jabiru 250 would be a way to go and is an SLSA which can come factory built, which still flies well, but instead of the two back seats you get extra baggage room. The wing is thicker but you get superior takeoff roll.
So getting back to my original point; get the Lightning and if you got enough money left over get me one too  Seriously, it's a fun aircraft, but it's also a sexy plane. Always got crowds at fly-ins. Always got crowds at the pump. I put maybe 10 gallons for a partial-fillup and go another 500 miles and still have a good reserve. Now if I just had one of my own, instead of borrowing others!
P.S. Buz, never have met your friend from down here to show him pics and get him to buy one. Think he's busy with some astronuts or something.

That would be news to me. Mine is certainly not an SLSA. It is a kit built that meets LSA requirements, i.e. an E-LSA.

I believe your aircraft is an experimental amateur built. At least that is what the FAA has it as.

Earl,
You plane is Experimental – Amateur Built. It just so happens that when you completed your phase I testing and placed it into phase II your plane met all the requirements to be flown under the light sport rules i.e. gross weight, stall speed, cruise at max continuous RPM, etc.
Colin is correct. As far as I understand the definitions, an E-LSA is a kit form of a production SLSA. It also does not have to adhere to the “51 percent” rule. Since the Lightning is not offered as an SLSA there cannot be an E-LSA version.
As far as the number of Lightning’s that conform to the Light Sport parameters I’ll have to go back and think about it. Off the top of my head I can think of four that have gone through the builders assistance program here in Shelbyville. I’m not sure how many, if any, that Ryan Gross at Green Landings or Greg Hobbs in AZ have completed with their builders assistance programs that meet the Light Sport parameters.
The bottom line concerning insurance is that we have 20 or so flying and as far as I know all of them have insurance.

Hi Brian,
Right, Mike is a flight surgeon for NASA and stays pretty busy between work in both Houston and Star City, Russia. It has been some time since I have talked to him but I think he still has the Bonanza. We used to have adjoining hangars here at the Williamsburg with each of us having a Pitts and Bonanza in them. Actually at one time we had five Pitts based here and that resulted in some great flying. I do hope you can eventually connect with him. He was probably here in Virginia for the hollidays since he still has a home here, but I was out of town a lot and we didn't connect during this visit.
