Yes the round struts do create a heckuva lot of drag... the round cross section is one of the highest drag shapes out there or so the experts say. I just put streamline cuffs(homemade aluminum) over my round struts and the difference in cruise speed is at least 5 mph. There is noticeable inprovement in climb and glide also, as well as significant buffet/vibration reduction, not to mention fuel burn.
Try Mrs. Carlson, Palestine OH(google) for streamline aluminum strut material. It's worth the cost/trouble.
