Looks like Garmin is discontinuing the GNS-480. It's a hell of a box and a lot smarter than I am (but some of you knew that.) You can almost get the thing to cook breakfast for you with the right programming. Smart people (and airline pilots) liked it for it's similarity to FMS systems. But it was a niche product, and it seems with Garmin having mined the smarts of the WAAS stuff out of the Apollo CNX-80, and WAAS enabled the 430/530, the 480 wasn't long for this world.
This news probably won't matter to most, but should be known for those considering upgrades. Also, we added ChartView this year to the MX20 while we still could. Didn't know how long it would still be available with the new MX200 out.

Steve:
Glad to know there is another Commander out there with a GNS-480. I have one in my 500B and another in my C-182. Great box. Sad to see them discontinued, but they will likely serve us well for years to come.
Happy New Year!

Dave,
It's been a good instrument for us. I still have mixed feelings about
running com's, nav's, transponder, all through the same interface. We got
the TIS/B traffic avoidance because of the kind of work we do, and that has
been great. But in busy airspace like New York or Boston, the traffic
pop-ups can be a real pain in the ass, as you can't do anything with the box
until you clear it. At 1200 feet over the Hudson river, the traffic scope
looks like a game of asteroids......
That and doing the survey work you turn pretty tight sometimes (right David
Owen?). The TIS/B ends up calling a 'traffic alert' on yourself. Nothing
like being out in the middle of nowhere over the Adirondacks for hours, and
having the box suddenly yell out a traffic alert on yourself. (Honest, if
it's that close don't even tell me. Why die scared?)

Steve,
hehehe, thats right, the guys do lots of jogging... That machine must be
pretty behind itself to see yourself as a threat... pretty funny... Did you
ever catch yourself looking out the window for yourself???

Imagine turning onto your line without a care in the world, everything's
great, and the damn box shouts out "TRAFFIC ALERT" and paints a little dot
at your altitude about an 1/8 of a mile away......
Look out the window? I duck for cover........
