I have a brochure for a Kitfox XL kit which states  it has a gross weight of 950.  I thought the XL was a IV.     It also claims it flys with a Rotax 503.  Is it the same width as a  IV?

Pete, all the old literature I have indicates the XL and Classic 4 airframe are the same.

Could someone explain how to tell the difference between a Kitfox IV 1050  and a IV 1200? Thanks, Don

The Kitfox IV was a Kitfox III with the new wing and was rated at 1050 as  was the Kitfox III.  In about 1993 they changed to 1200 by beefing up the  carry thru parts of the fuselage and stronger struts.  The also heightened  the rudder.  In making my 1050 I did make changes and had it signed off at  1200.

Don, besides the taller fin and rudder, the wing struts and tube landing gear main tubes are one inch OD on the 1200.  On the 1050 those are smaller diameter tubes.  There are some tubes in the fuselage that are larger on the 1200 also.



FWIW, the 1050 max gross weight on the Classic 4 with a 503 is a power limitation, not an airframe limitation.

All,

 I built an XL in 1996, they are a  lighter version of the model IV. It was sold as a package with the 503 DCDI,  width was same as a IV, Gross was 950.

I edited my first message to say the "Classic 4 with a 503 engine is limited to 1050 as a power limitation...."  The edits must not go to those using the email version of the List.  Bear with me, I'm still struggling learning to use this forum.
