I believe that the changeover was 1982.
Both types are totally interchangeable, and both produce 360hp.
The changes are quite significant - for example the cylinders are different, and there are a number of internal changes.
Perfectly possible to change Series I to Series II, but at considerable expense.
External identification is very easy, because Series II has the large 5 inch circular plate on the top port side of the gear box.

Between the Type I and Type II you can also see an external difference in the Cooling Fins on the cylinders. On the Type II it will appear that every other fin is recessed. A side by side comparison makes this pretty obvious.
Additionally there are differences in the valve rocker box area that are not interchangeable (valve spring cups for example).
The pistons are a different mass, and the wrist pins and pin caps are different design and mass. However the total mass is identical.

Any difference internally or in the durability of the two? Are all accessories interchangeable between the two series?

between some M14 variants there is a difference in how oil is transmitted through the accessory case and these parts are not transferable.

The Russians were very through,and had the money to do the work well,so it is a reasonable assumption the the SeriesII is an improvement.
All accessories are interchangeable.

Ummm, not so sure of that Doc. I believe that it might have been
recommended not to use Gen 1 engines for a PF upgrade. I think Gen II
types are what were preferred. Richard Goode would know for sure of
course. I am just getting that feeling that I have heard something
about a limitation somewhere in the past.
