Hi Cliff,
We can do an extension of the aux. tank that adds 7 gallons and is pretty straight forward.  Beyond that it would be a more major project.   The range with that configuration is about 300 nm based on the experience with my -50.

If someone is willing to donate an aircraft for 6 months and pay for the R&D costs, we'll do it.  We have access to experienced aerospace engineers and a fantastic sheet metal guy on staff.  It is a long process to do it correctly and with the limited Yak-50 market, it unfortunately does not make any sense for us to swallow the costs....we'll never get them back.

With our current work schedule we'll be unable to start another project like that for at least 6 months, but it could be a good winter project if someone is interested.

Cheers,

Barry

Is anyone currently providing  similar aux tanks for the YAK 50. If not
,will  YOU consider doing so?

We offer long range wet-wings for the 50. This is a modification, which has the full approval of Yakovlev Design Bureau, and indeed has YDB part numbers.

It gives an additional 80 litres - i.e. significantly more than doubling total capacity, with very little increase in weight.

Unfortunately it is a complex conversion, so the wings have to go to Russia, so not that practical!

That too would be cost prohibitive. Reason - you will pay for a container shipment to and from. It doesn't matter what the weight is. It is the type of cargo that generates the rate. As in Aircraft Parts. So figure $5K US each way to the cost of the wings. Plus disassembly and crating.

Doc,

Why would anyone need that much gas in the -50...the thing is NOT comfortable for more than about 45 minutes...at best!

If you really want some legs...lets mod a -52 or CJ to act as an aerial refueling platform. Put a pitot tube looking device on the other wing and run a basket off the KCY-52.

Tim,
Not a bad idea! Can't get enough fuel in a 52 to do that though. But those
"Gull Wings" on the Chinese Nanchang could do it. Hell, they could drag two
baskets with that wing span. We could install the Pitot tube from Dynon
under the left wing tip and use the existing pitot tube for the probe! They
would have to put that M-14PF engine in the nose to refuel us at airspeeds
comfortable enough for both though! Otherwise with that anemic 265, we would
be pulling it back to say <60/600 and still probably would be pushing on the
basket. I'm told binding the basket is a bad thing.
:>))
Actually, we could pull our tanks out and put a bladder in that space. That
is a simple statement without going into too many details. That space could
yield a whopping 54 gals. At our 12 to 13 gal/hr burn at throttle setting
that the anemic CJ's and 52's can play, you are talking 4.0 hours of gas!
Now with that you are going to have to make some ergonomic changes to our
SOLO cockpits. Piddle paks and box lunches will definitely be in order. A
set of cruise pedals like those on those Harleys and an autopilot are both
on the dream list. Since we can get reasonable fuel consumption at a
respectable cruise. We can truck along watching the country side click on
off. Not quite like 480 kts but respectable.

The problem is that the wings still need to be sent both ways across the water.I supose it might make sense if one sent [say]3 sets of wings to be done together.

Good point Richard. But getting 2 or 3 sets of wings to the same location in a country the size of the US is challenging and costly too.
