I have looked at several planes on line and they have turn down tips. I was wondering how well they work and do they cut down on your top end speed. Also do they cause any other problems on take off and landings. Lee

Droop tips I don;t think cause and extra drag than the Hoerner tip. I have never seen any concrete data that shows there is any gain with either tip.

Some do not like the droop tip as it apparently obscures their vision off the wing tip. I had read other like them in case of dragging a tip on the runway it will save their wing from damage.

I do assume you are referring to droop tips ?

It's a great place to install roller-blade wheels for those extreme
cross-wind landings, and for when you just can't seem to keep it straight. Wink

On the surface that sounds a bit silly... but remember the Quickie Q200??
Landing gear was in the wingtips. A small wheel canted at the right angle
could save a lot of heartbreak on paved runways... Consider them training
wheels for crosswinds.

Won't help with my floats though Smile

Here are some photos of what I am looking for does anyone have any used ones before I look for new tips. It almost looks like there is more than one type of tip in some other Photos I did not attach because they were not "N" numbered and I figured it would cost to much to have them shipped over seas.

Yes the are the stock droop tips on the KF models I - II - III, if you don't have them count your blessing. I would gladly trade you the droop tips on my plane for your horner type tips in a minute, but alas they won't interchange

Cause I'm tired of hitting my head on them when walking around the wing, you can't see they limit vis. they are just plane ugly do nothing to help the plane fly, if you drag a wing tip you will bend the rear spar they are ugly guess I already said that.

After I bought my model 3, someone from this list (sorry, forgot who)
sent me a DVD with a video of someone who took his first flight in a
model 3. He first went in high speed taxi on an asphalt runway and lost
control and went in a ground loop. While it was filmed from a distance,
it still shows how easy it can happen and what it does.
When the plane comes back to the apron and damages were examined, the
right hand drooping winglet was found to be shaved about half the way
down by the contact with the asphalt. Some modifications were done to
the bungees (While is is not said on the video, I think he had too soft
gears) then he went for his first take off, first circuit pattern and
everything went fine.

My conclusion then was: If he didn't had the drooping winglets, he
would have hit the end of the right flaperon and was in for repairs
before he would ever fly his plane.

Maybe I am wrong but while I agree that the winglets don't add much -
if anything - to the STOL performance and ... yes, the are not
especially pretty on this traditional type of aircraft, they can
prevent damages in a ground loop and ... maybe they also prevent the
uplift of the wing in gusting crosswind.

The bottom line is; I wouldn't install them on a Kitfox without them,
but I wouldn't remove them either from my aircraft that was built by
someone else and bought second hand.

Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

My $0.02 worth.
The droop tips are ugly (IMHO).
They do nothing for aerodynamics (that I know of).
They make an excellent pair of handholds for moving the airplane with wings folded.
I have drug a tip landing on a path that turned out to be narrower that the gear width. Easily repaired, invisible to all but the most discerning, and no damage to anything else.
Final score: I'll keep the droop tips for their functionality for the way my Kitfox is used.

Say what you want, but a lot of STOL aircraft have them, I wonder why?  My videos, taken with chase plane shows clearly, the tips do not spill air at stall. Have not seen any signs of that with the speedster tips.  Until then, I will still believe they do work. Clint
