I have a leak from the rear gear handle. I have isolated it to the small hole in the side of the body of the mechanism behind the panel. With main air on and engine not running it will bleed down the main air tank in about 10-15 minutes.
How do I isolate the problem to either the gear handle or something else in the gear system that is leaking through this vent hole?

Craig,
I had the same thing and ended up replacing the gear handle/valve as it was leaking internally. Solved 90 percent of my air issues. Very simple remove and replace (be sure and label all the fittings, I drew a picture as well) and can be done without jacking. M-14P(Jill) can overhaul the valve for about 150$ as an alternative, otherwise, I would call Doug.

In the yak it means you have a either a bad gear actuator cylinder seal leak that is letting air go by the down pressure side to the up side internally past the chevron seals back to the handle where the air is coming from the relief air hole, or the gear up-lock seals or line leak. With your gear handle latch locked move the gear handle to the center position and see if the leak stops, if it does then gear handle is OK and the leak is elsewhere most likely the chevrons. You will then need to take a up pressure line off the cylinders one at a time and listen for air. If you hear air that is the cylinder leaking.

Make sure one of the flares on the lines leading into the valve is not cracked. I just spent a lot of time trying to find just that problem. Because of the way the gear valve is set up, most likely it is either the inlet line that comes in at a right angle to the back of the valve (out board) or the middle line that runs forward to the front gear valve.
If anyone is interested I've figured out a way to eliminate the rear gear valve. Takes just a couple of hours.

Since this is a vent hole it's quite possible the leak is in one of the gear
actuators. maybe a damaged actuator seal.

Craig,
I also removed all three gear actuators and had Doug overhaul each. They were not bad, but can be the culprit, usually the nose gear. Easy to R and R; and no jacking required. Unless you know for sure that all emerg valves, check valves on fire wall, actuators, gear handles etc. have had any TLC and or been inspected; I would bet there is corrosion all through the system that will cause springs to stick and felt seals to break down (especially in steamy south FL) and valve halves to pit. Two ways to deal with it..."Fly to failure" and piecemeal individual component replacement/overhaul or attack it all at once and pull everything and git er done for about $2200 in parts/overhaul. The labor is simple that any non-mechanic can do (I am proof) and with a helper, can do in a week. Look at it as a great way to learn the system. Dealing with the CJ air system is like blowing a tire..."There are those that have and those that will".
