Strut fairings , airfoil shaped jury struts, Airfoil covers for Horizontal stab support braces. I have been looking at other planes out there and am thinking that I could clean up the hole that my plane punches in the air. So if no one has any of the above parts to sell I will have to make my own.
I was thinking I might make some covers that that are like the ones on the 172's where the struts attach.

Lee, Strut fairings are easy to make from wood. Spruce or cedar are the lightest, covered with dacron. What do the horiz stab braces look like? How are they constructed?

I just have the Factory stuff on every thing. The Hoz Stb struts are just a solid tube that is adjustable on the ends. I was told that having the struts not profiled was like having a flat bar flying through the air. Makes alot of drag. I kinda think that I want something light (not Carbon Fiber to costly) but maybe thin material like coil stock or gutter material. I heard there is a company that makes plastic one but Kitfox says do not drill into the struts so I will have to clamp it on.

Back when I was flying a Himax, I bent up some strut fairings out of aluminum coil stock on a siding brake. If the term siding brake is not familiar to some, it is used by carpenters for bending light gauge metal for covering window trim and things like that and is usually able to bend up to 10' material. It worked quite well and I got about 5 mph more in cruise at the same RPM. I drilled some 1/4" holes in the bottom of the strut cover and shot some spray foam in the holes to keep the  cover from moving around in the center and shot foam in the ends to hold it there. It worked. My Avid used wood glued to the back of the struts. The wood came with the kits from the factory. Jim Chuk, Avid Mk IV, Jabiru, Mn

[quote]Regarding aerodynamic improvements, a book called “Speed with Economy” is very worthwhile. Written by Kent Paser in 1994 about efficiency improvements to his Mustang II, the principles apply to any aircraft. Ken has a very scientific approach to validating his improvements, the cornerstone of any aerodynamic endeavor. As of today, Amazon.com shows one copy available for anyone interested, and one more was available on Alibris.com. Strut attach covers are not a bad idea. Other builders have added gap-seals to their h-stab/elevator joints. Also, the openings between the v-stab and the h-stab is ripe some improvement. For those without wheel pants, hubcaps (though unsightly to some) would be another place. In any case, it would be nice to see some actual measured data someday on these and other potential improvements. - Mike Perkins [b]
