The fitting on my main air bottle leaks (soapy water clearly shows this). I have tried many different O-rings on this fitting, but none stop the leak. The original O-ring isn't really an "O"in cross-section, but rather, has a square cross-section.
This original ring (which is rather squished up) will at least hold 2.5 to 3.0 atmospheres, but no more. The compressor will bring it up to 5.0 (slowly due to the leak), but as soon as I shut down it leaks back down to 2.5 to 3.0.
You guys know of any "tricks" or O-rings that will work, or does anybody have any of these original "square" O-rings?
Thanks,
Steve Dalton

Steve;
CJ or Yak?? May be the same but my comments are to the CJ. The seal you
refer to is made of Lead. I believe Doug has them in stock. I have
manufactured annealed copper replacements for these which, I think, are an
improvement but the labour involved (without automated tooling) is
prohibitive.

Sorry, should have been more specific. It's a Yak.
Thanks,

I have had the same leak. I found the edges around the Oring were not entirely flat. There was a tit not allowing the Oring to seal. I filed it away and now good to go. I have used an American hardware store Oring for the past year with no problem.

If you purchase a US manufactured primer pump seal from Carl/Jill at M14P,
it will solve your problem. The primer pump seal is much like the original
seal in the air tanks and fits perfectly over the male fitting that goes
into the tank. Try one and I think you will be quite pleased.

Dennis,
I bought both, primer seal and original bottle fitting seal from Jill. Turns out the seal I had--that leaked--was a primer seal (badly smashed flat). I sent the bottle to Jill for hydro testing and plan to try the original o-ring when I get it back. I'll let you know how it works.

OK. I have not found THE perfect air tank flat o-ring yet. I did fit the
primer pump seal to a couple of tanks and they worked fine. But that
doesn't mean it will work for all tanks.

Hi Dennis;
The CJ air tanks use a lead or aluminium sealing washer ( I have seen both)
to seal the air fitting and drain plug. I would think a
rubber/neoprene/buna/viton etc."O" ring would be less than adequate in this
application.
I have been using annealed copper. Had some free time a couple of years ago
and made a few. Doug Sapp should have the originals in stock.
As to the lifetime of flexible hose there is no mandated lifetime either in
the US or Canada for a privately registered certificated aircraft.
I have seen 40 year old flex hose in excellent condition. This is an extreme
example but 20 years is not uncommon. It is a function of environment,
temperature, application, actual usage time, etc.etc.
Remove the hose, check for good flexibility with no sound emitted, wash the
exterior ( a hand cleaner usually works good), visually check condition of
exterior fabric and signs of steel mesh distress, wash interior with
petroleum solvent and visually inspect.
Inspect terminal fittings for any evidence of corrosion, cracking or other
damage.
Cheers;
Walt

Hi Walt,
Unfortunately, the air tanks on the 52 have a recessed opening which houses
the flat o-ring. The opening is threaded and the flare fitting is screwed
into the tank with a large 24 mm nut to secure it tightly against the flat
O-ring. I agree it would be great to have a nice crush washer as is on the
output check valve around the banjo fitting. But that is not possible based
on the design of the tank opening and fittings. I wish there was another
way to do it because finding suitable O rings for the 52's air tanks is a
real challenge.

Dennis,
Jill at M14P sent me a bottle seal, which is a typical looking O-ring that appeared to fit nicely. She also sent me a primer seal, which is a flat O-ring (a square-ring?) that is thicker than the one I had in my tank that leaked.
I just sent the tanks off for testing. When I get them back I'll let you know how the new O-ring works. And if it doesn't work I'll be trying the new primer seal.

Steve,
I've tried the primer seal. Had success once. But on the second tank, it
did not. Let me know if it worked for you.
