I have to admit, I don't always read the daily digest,
but when I do, it seems like the normal ebb and flow
of excitement and controversy. Congratulations to
those with newly flying airplanes, and encouraging
vibes to the rest still plugging away at construction.
We're still working on one wing. One, we're trying for
one. We got the top skin of the right wing clecoed to
the skeleton yesterday. Wasn't there something on
television? Last night, we slowly flipped the wing
over, and placed the bottom skin on. I'm glad so much
is pre-drilled and cut, but the tie-down ring slot is
on the outboard side of the number 9 rear rib, instead
of on the inboard side, creating a minor issue with
the tie-down ring. DH talked to Zenith today. I did
place number 9 rr correctly, with the flanges
outboard, but seeing as the slot isn't on the webbing
side, I've been advised to trade that rib with the
left wing, so I don't have to cut a new tie-down slot.
If the holes I already drilled in the top flange of
the rib don't line up with the holes in the left
wing's top skin, I'll get a new rib.

We didn't manage to order all the stuff necessary to
close a wing when we ordered the wing kit ages ago, so
very recently got the fuel system, and I'm saving for
the controls kit. I thought about just ordering the
controls parts needed to close the wings, but started
adding up the costs of the individual pieces in the
controls kit, and stopped when the number on my
calculator exceeded the cost of the whole kit.

In the meantime of not having a flying Z-Plane
ourselves, we're transitioning to a rental 601 at
Maury Regional Airport. Yes, Tennessee and upper
Alabama, there is a Zenith for rent near us!!! After
flying it a few times, neither of us are ready yet to
take it up without the instructor. The little beast
just flat takes some getting used to. We keep going
back to Cessnas to reassure ourselves we haven't
completely lost our minds, or abilities. It's a fun
airplane, just different from the Cessnas we're used
to. I've got a few close up photos on my photobucket
of the nose gear and reinforcement extrusion angle
added inside the fuselage after a particularly hard
landing. The main gear transmits a fair amount of
stress up the fuselage skin, so Zenith provided
extrusion angle to put inside the fuselage where the
side skin meets the belly skin above the gear channel.
We're going to reinforce our airplane the same way.
Everyone is welcome to have a look:

I would definately recommend spending some money to
get some quality seat time in the rental 601.

It's still raining and I hear aluminum in the basement
calling my name.
