Guys:
I posted this to the Corvair list already so apologies for those that have to see it twice.
It is toe-freezing cold up here in Nebraska today. This morning my test pilot brought along his youngest son to the airport for our Saturday-fly-off session for N5SL. I shot some video of Ron taking off and landing. His son was pretty excited about seeing it all.

Dave:
The cabin heat is working 100% as designed. Since I didn't install any cabin heat, Ron is has freezing toes while flying. I did my best to seal up the firewall but I still have the slits for nose-wheel steering contributing to the cold. Ron bundles up pretty good and he loves to fly so the toe-freezing is just part of it.
I'm working on an idea or two to add cabin-heat and will post results when I try them out.
One big change I'm making is the pitch of the horiz. Stabilizer. It was difficult to determine level since there is not a flat surface on the horizontal stabilizer so mine must have been installed a little front high. I have lowered the front bracket attach points and that helped. Now I have the rear attach brackets re-made with some lift in the back so the stabilizer will be tilted a bit further than it is now. This should allow hands-off approach with full flaps and also little to no trim in level flight. That is the goal anyway.

I have a few more hours of flight training before getting my sport pilot ticket. Four to be exact. I passed the written test and built an airplane, now I just need to be legal in the airplane for a CFI to finish my lessons. 23 hours more to go for phase I - The plan is to finish them off in February, then finish lessons and do my check ride in March.
Guess how hard it will be to schedule my airplane for a lesson compared to one of those $#%!(at)#$$ rentals. Oh, and did I mention I get to pick my CFI instead of getting whatever loser commercial pilot wannabe that is in line for the next lesson to build his hours at my expense? I had two of those start training me only to let me know they would be leaving me to work on their "twin-engine" hours toward the demise some other poor guys checking account balance. After the second one I decided to wait for my airplane.
The above paragraph is my experience only and may not reflect the character of all commercial pilot wannabe losers.

Scot, this is really sad. I'm also working on my SP certificate, at a
school that specializes in SP. At the school I go to, most of the
instructors and most of the students have gray hair, or none, and the
instructors are mostly folks that have retired from one form or another
of professional flying. It's a nice group of experienced instructors
who do it for a little extra money, but mainly so they can keep flying.
The bad bit is that it's a two hour drive each way to get there, but
worth the trouble in my opinion. If anyone is interested I'll recommend
the place: Chesapeake Sport Pilot at Bay Bridge Airport, Stevensville,
MD. They currently have 4 planes, and are adding 2 more, all used
almost exclusively for SP.
I sure hope you have better luck with your next instructor,

Now that makes sense Scott. I was gonna ask that same question.
I had one of those as my first instructor, I was getting ready to fire him when he told me he had a job out of state. The next two or three instructors had gray hair. Having several different instructors has made me a better pilot.

While you guys are on the subject of instruction.
I'm currently scratch building a 701 and do not have a ticket of any
kind(had a glider cert a long time ago). My question is after completion is
there a way to train in my own plane. How can I work off the 25-40 hrs
flight time without a cert. My 1st thought was a loose interpretation of the
regs that stated no one else unless essential to the flight. Since I would
have to have a CFI to do the training he would be essential. But have since
learned this is not possible. It seems the only way around it is to have
some one fly off the 40 then start training.
Are there any other suggestions and is there anyone in the DFW area that
would consider working with me in this venture i.e. flying the hours.

I'd be glad to fly off the hours for you but I'm not near there. I know
a guy in San Antonio who might do it for you but you would have to bring
the airplane there for a couple of weekends. If this would be acceptable
to you I'll contact the guy and see if he's interested. e-mail me

As I was told by the local Faa office is that you can train in your own
experimental and LSA.

Are you an EAA member? If so, make sure you attend your local EAA chapter meetings. I'm willing to bet there are several guys who would love to fly your 40 hours for you. I am very fortunate to have a great EAA chapter (EAA Chapter 80) where there are plenty of guys willing to fly off my hours. I'm even luckier to have Ron Gawer put so much effort into the testing process.
I don't know how far you are in the building process but the closer you get to the finish line, the interest level will grow. A lot of people start building airplanes and don't get very far. Most of the EAA members know this and many have projects they started years ago and didn't get very far. Stick with it and earn some credibility and you will have more help than you can use. The FAA inspection process was the most difficult for me since I didn't know what to expect. The EAA chapter guys were a god-send when it came time to get everything together and dot my i's and cross my t's.
Make sure you follow the rules and don't allow two people in the airplane until you have completed your phase I testing and completed the documentation. You can train in your own aircraft. It will be a great experience.

John we just had this thread. No you can't get away with that loose interpretation unless your instructor is a moron and doesn't mind having his certificates pulled.
As Scott said join your local EAA chapter. I'm sure you can find someone or many someones that would be willing to help you fly off the hours.

As I understand it, when flying an experimental aircraft, you don't
actually need to be rated for that category of aircraft unless you are
carrying passengers. For instance, a pilot with an airplane rating can
fly his experimental gyroplane legally without a gyroplane rating on
his certificate. The FAA will only require the gyroplane rating if you
are carrying passengers. So if you had a private pilot glider rating
in the past, that certificate never expires. You just need to get
current in gliders again and get a BFR and then you might be legal to
fly off the phase I time on your airplane. I may be completely wrong
on this point, so don't take my word on it, and I certainly wouldn't
recommend that a very low time pilot perform the first test flights on
a newly built airplane.
Realistically, you should hire someone to fly at least the first few
hours on your airplane to make sure that there are no critical
problems with it. At that point, you may be able to get enough
training hours to get signed off to solo in a similar aircraft on your
light sport student certificate. Then you should definitely be legal
to fly off the rest of your phase I hours as long as you keep the solo
endorsement current. As I recall from my private pilot training, a
solo endorsement is good for 90 days then you need a new endorsement.
