Has anyone been successful in mounting landing lights in the wingtips? If so, can you give me some information on this or any recommendations. If not in the wingtips, then where would a practical place be? Any light weight lights?

Paul, I believe Don at shericom(at)rogers.com (shericom(at)rogers.com) has a Mod 4 project for sale. The pictures he has of the project show landing lights in the wing tip.

I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase, but this subject has been exhaustively discussed on the Lancair ( www.lancair.net/maillist.html) and RV ( www.vansairforce.net) forums, as they both use every possible permutation of landing light and position lights. You'll find much more and more current information there. As the tips for all three aircraft are glass, and are about the same shapes you should find good information.

I have a Model IV 1200, and on my plane, the landing lights and I have two are mounted at the end of the wingtip, the actual wingtip fits over the light. The light is mounted to a bracket that is mounted to the spar.  Your wingtip will have a plastic lense.

Paul, do yourself a favor and talk to John and/or Debra Mc Bean of Sport
Plane LLC (sportplane(at)cableone.net) 208-337-5111 and ask them about the new
AeroSun 1600. They are anti-collision pulse lights and landing lights. They
are made with extremely bright LED's and draw very low current in contrast
to all other types of lights. I have them and love them. Say hello for me to
John and Debra.

Here's how I do my landing lights now, it is a removable light bar that
attaches to the float attach brackets. I also have the wingtip lights, but
they are a really poor solution. The lightbar in the image is when I was
first setting it up, so the lights (three) are not on yet, and the wiring is
a mess. But you get the idea. I have a quick connect and can
detach the bar in just a few minutes.

http://www.aselia.com/n85ae/lightbar2.jpg

With three Halogen driving lights I can light the runway like a 747. drag
is insignificant so I simply leave the bar on all the time. Skeptics would
say how can drag be insignificant? I suspect because the air is so
turbulent along the belly in any case I can't tell there on the plane
when flying.

Reflected light off the belly provides ground illumination during flare
so the tail dragger landings at night are no longer the worrisome feel
for the ground event that they were.

With pitch and rudder adjustment I can illuminate the runway from
1/2 mile final (or more), at least well enough to see it.

I flew my plane for a year with tip lights, and I honestly was never happy
with them no matter how they were adjusted. The lights you can fit in
the wingtips simply are in the wrong location for a taildragger. Plus you
can't put a BIG light in the wingtip.

Regards,
Jeff

I installed a small driving light in front of my Kitfox. Worked for years, mounted on bottom of oil cooler. Hope pictures take.

The pictures were quite small, but it looks as though you cut into the round cowl to install?

Jeff, Exellent light bar. Did you weld it out of aluminum or steel tubing? Also, what type of quick disconnect is that? It looks like a hex head bolt but I see there is no nut on it. The bar sits directly behind your Grove gear. The lights might add drag but the bar wouldn't.

Thanks for the photos Clint. They came through just great. Question: With the vibration from the engine, do you go through many light bulbs?

Paul,

I have a Series V with a similar setup to Ray's, except I made an adjustable bracket and attached it to the last rib. The light extends past the forward spar. The wingtip has the plastic lens. The light is a 12V/50W DC halogen bulb in a small housing I found at the Home Depot lighting department. I have one on each wing - one is a spot type bulb and the other is a flood. I posted pictures on the old Kitfox list web site which I believe has been converted onto the Matronix site. By the way - total weight of both lights is about 1 pound.

Have severl hundreds of hours and haven't changed bulbs yet. Use it in flashing mode when airport is busy.

It is double shock mounted.

Received the check yesterday. Glad to get that carpet to someone that can use it. Love it on my plane, I just made cardboard template and then cut the capet an put it on top. It looks great.
