I appreciate the description on how to remove and replace the throttle
shaft screws. It certainly seemed to me that the butterfly is self
centering when closed, and the screws go in nicely. The throttle
either works well or not at all!
Now I am more than a little puzzled because my newly rebuilt carbs are
flooding out, or at least one of them is. Could be a stuck float,
which seems most likely, but I am not sure. The Bing manual talks
about how the atomizer must be oriented properly, front to back, where
it tops out in the carburetor throat. I didn't notice that the it
has a high side or a low side, and I wonder if it does on the 64?

Hi Jack,
Could be a float. Double check the float arms lever. Do you have fuel coming out the overflow? Might check the fuel shut off needle. They should be 10.5mm from the edge of the carb when held upside down. If not this can allow either too much fuel (flooding) or too little depending which way one may be bent. If you rebuilt your carb make sure you put the enricher valve back in right side up. How old are the carbs? If they are old then the newer rebuild kit has some newer style floats. There are two rebuild kits and the higher priced one comes with new floats.
Just a few thoughts.

Roger,
Yes I have fuel coming out of the overflow at mid to high range
throttle settings. I did in fact put the enrichener in upside down at
first, but rotated it 180 degrees when it did not work. I will take
them off and check again. I didn't measure the float lever arms, but
when pushed gently up to the stop, they are parallel with the carb
body edge. These carbs are from 2003, so not very old. Thanks for
your ideas. It will be a few days before I get back to it.

Roger,
I had time today to go check the enrichener and go over the linkage
adjustment, and check the enrichener disk. It might have been a
slightly stuck float, because it works fine now. Several full power
runs up and down the runway and I could not repeat the flooding. So a
quick flight around the pattern close in and all is normal.
I do think that once you flood these carburetors they stay flooded for
a good long while. You have to just leave them and come back later!
The other day when they flooded, it happened because I had the
enrichener return springs on backwards, and one of them came off. I
fixed that, but the flooding persisted. Now I do worry about those
little springs, because if one of them broke or fell off in flight,
you would not have full power, and you would have one very rough
running engine. Anyone have thoughts on this? Though rebuilding
these carbs has been a challenge, I feel much better about my
knowledge of how they work and what the possible problems are. At
least I know more than I did!!!

Hi Jack,
The springs don't usually have any issues. The springs pull the enricher to the off position. So if it was there to start with it should not open. If you have your throttle open to at least 3500 rpm the enricher won't affect the throttle. Try it on the ground and this is also a test to check the carbs if you detect rough running. You can use this method to see if the rough running is might be carb related.
When at idle with the engine warmed up just sitting on the ground and you pull on the choke lever the engine gets real rough. That's normal. Now lock the brakes and take the rpm up to 3500-3800 and pull the choke lever, nothing should happen or just a few rpm drop like about 25rpm. The enricher does not effect the running above this point. If it does then you most likely have a carb issue not an electrical one. If it is rough running at lower rpm and you take it up to 3500 rpm and then add the choke and the engine smooths out then you have a carb problem. If you are flying and it starts to run rough at low rpm or on approach then give it some throttle and bring it down with more than normal throttle and then go back to idle just before you set down. This will help make sure you have an engine until you are safely over the runway or about to land. If you have time in the air pull the choke on and see if this helps the lower rpm idle rough running.
This is just a tool to stick into your bag of tricks.
