OK, I'll stick my neck out with this one.....MX2. Have you guys read about this plane? All carbon fiber, two-place, 400+ deg/sec roll, +/- 14gs. Check it out at www.mx2aircraft.com.
Continuing to stick my neck out....the Pitts S1 is probably the BEST price performer of any aircraft capable of competition aerobatics.
On the list also is the Giles, Extra, Edge 540, and Pitts S2C. Of course, if you want to take someone along, the MX2, Extra, and Pitts S2C are the planes of choice.
OK, none of these have round engines. As for the 50, it was a great airplane in its day and is a good price performer. The Sukhoi is also a stellar aircraft even though it is late 80s, early 90s technology. Technology (and prices) have moved on.
Oh, if only the bank account were larger!!
Craig
PS - am I excommunicated from the list since my choices have flat engines??

Obviously a deranged man. The only cure is to spend more time behind the

What you state, is all very correct, Craig.
Now for fun flying, I prefer my Yak 50 over the Extra 300 that I also may
fly regularly. But if you want to do some competitive aerobatics (even
intermediate level, but certainly advanced; I don't even think about
unlimited) IMHO a Yak 52 and even a Yak 50 can't compete. The Yak 50 can
easily do a series of vertical rolls, but roll rate - even with shovels - is
way too slow. And the YAk 50 is so fast, that you've got to work hard to
stay in the box.
But my Yak 50 easily outclimbs an Extra 300L (without passenger). And I
still like the amazed looks of spectators when being airborne in no time
with my Yak 50. In an Extra 300L, you still have to wait for speed building
up, stick forward, and then rotate. Yak 50: just hold the stick, full
throttle and you take off before you know it.
I also agree with you about the Pitts. It's an adorable airplane. And every
landing with a Pitts is a challenge ....

Good choice Craig.
As for your comments on the Suke... Well... Not sure I agree with that.
No other aircraft uses titanium the way that darn thing does... Mainly
because no other country could AFFORD to put it in there like the
Russians did/still do. Further, varients of the M-14 or M-9 have
horsepower figures that are near or over 450 HP. Put all the mods
together from EVERYONE, and you might even EXCEED 450 HP. I was told
that the 31's wing went over 20 G's before it failed in a load to
destruction test. After it failed, they stressed it again, and it went
to NINE G's (!!!) before it failed the second time. I know of no other
aircraft that can do THAT.
That said, while technology does indeed move on, in the case of the
Sukhoi 31, it had to.. Just to come close to catching up!
Sure the Pitts is great... And was one of the best in the world... Until
the Russians came along with their product. I would have to say that a
YAK-55 can out-do a Pitts... Other than maybe the Model 12 of course.
All a matter of opinion of course, but it is interesting to compare what
models won what titles in the World's.

Question of taste. I find the Pitts S2A with the front cockpit covered a
beautiful airplane. It has earned it's place in history.

Now if we are going to get into the flat head bipes, then add the Christian
Eagle too! She is a little less squirrelly to land than the Pitts S1 or S2.
And she looks just as good on the ground as in the air as does the Pitts.
Bottom line is, we love our airplanes and we love flying them. As one of my
hanger mates said last evening as we were closing up the hanger about to
turn out the lights, "can you just walk away from them without looking back
for that one last glimpse?" No! They are our steel mistresses! They come
close to sex!

Do you really think that the Pitts is squirrelly on landing? Quick,
yes, but it didn't feel squirrelly to me. OTOH, I liked my Piper
Clipper too.

Sorry Doc but flying is better than sex. I can still make several hops
in one day and each hop lasts an hour. (Well, when I am doing full-on
acro I can't last for an hour but I can still make two or three hops.)
And anyone on this list who tells me that he can have sex several
times per day for an hour at a time, well ... I promise not to laugh
too hard.

By the way, my aerobatic mount will be my CJ. I know, I know, it is not the "best" aerobatic plane. BUT it does warbird style aerobatics just fine. Being in my late 40's I don't want or need to pull lots of Gs to have fun.
I will only own one plane and the CJ gives me 1) a great community of owners (both Yaks, CJs and others), 2) a plane to take friends flying (my wife will not fly), 3) a plane to do fun, simple, aerobatics with, 4) with extended range tanks, a plane to make trips with (SNF, OSH, RPA events, etc), and 5) in my opinion, a darn good looking plane.
So, the CJ fit the bill for me as the "best" aerobatic aircraft.

Sounds like you are saying, "best general-purpose aircraft". I agree
that the CJ is a better GP aircraft. But the CJ6A is *not* an
aerobatic mount. It will roll (after a fashion) and it will loop. It
will not do a hammerhead (you have to fly it around the corner) and it
will not stay in a spin at forward CG. But it does have the best
control "feel" and harmony of any airplane I have flown. I like it.
(For that matter, I have never met an airplane I didn't like. Well,
maybe the C-172. It is just beyond boring.)
