Gang:

I had a great day yesterday. Left my house at 0630 to go fly the Civil Air Patrol Cessna 182. Watched a beautiful sunrise in warm 70 degree air as I drove to the airport. Preflighted and chatted with the controller I have gotten to know well at the airport. Took off and flew at 1000 feet up the coast line for a short 20 minute flight. Flying over blue water and looking at the multi-million dollar homes from the air. The purpose of the flight was to reposition the plane and fly cadets for their orientation flights. I flew four cadets during the morning. Took one cadet on his first ever ride in a small plane. What fun that is. One other cadet was on an instrument orientation flight where they learn in real life what the instruments in the plane do. One other cadet was on the flight where we do steep turns, MCA, and approaches to stalls. He couldn't stop talking about how cool the G's were in steep turns. He smiled ear to ear. I flew back to home base in the early afternoon thinking what a great way this is to share my passion for aviation with young kids who dream of flying (I've flown 138 of these orientation rides so far).

At midnight, I got a call to go out and look for an ELT. It was a dual beacon ELT that is typical for an EPIRB. The satellite put the signal out in the everglades. Possibly an airboat in distress? Suited up and out the door I go. Met my crew and preflighted the plane under a near full moon with crystal clear skies and 4 knots of wind. Took off and called up Miami Approach and got a great controller to work with who cleared us into Miami Class "B" airspace 30 mile out - leaving no worries for us except to prosecute our mission.

Got out over the everglades at 2500 feet heading for the location of the last satellite "hit." Clear skies above us and beautiful ground fog, lit up by the moon, below us and the lights of the city of Miami to our east.

Listening to 121.5 on com 1 and Miami Approach on com 2. Not much activity at 2:30 am!! We found the signal and used the GPS to identify the coordinates. Turns out, the signal was from something at Tamiami Airport. Signal was weak, so it was probably a plane in a hangar. Our Incident Commander gave us the OK to head back home as a ground team would head to the airport and look for the offending aircraft. Glad it wasn't a stranded airboat.

I contacted our friendly controller who gave us clearance direct downtown Miami, to the shore then northeast to our home base. What a treat that was. Flying over the city of Miami at night is beautiful! All the tall building with neon lit up and lights everywhere. As we neared home base, the controller gave us clearance to descend at our discretion eight miles out. I thanked him for the treat of flying over downtown Miami at night. He replied that he though we'd enjoy it and a thanked us for what we do in CAP.

Tying down the aircraft at 0345, my crew and I laughed and chatted about what fun flying is and how our spouses don't understand what the appeal is. I had to pinch myself that I must be living right to have a day with such diversity of flying. This is why I fly!

Very cool. Thanks for the story! I'm looking forward to flying both my
CJ6 and for CAP.

I go for a "Pre" Check-out flight on Saturday with one of CAP
Instructors. Hopefully, I'll be CAP qualified (Transport Mission Pilot)
the Saturday after that.
