I wonder what you Firestar II drivers are getting for a top speed, straight & level. I'm getting 82 mph [gps].

503 DCDI
"C" box, 3.41:1 ratio
68" 3 blade Kiev Prop
streamlined struts
heavy plane - 410 [dry]
heavy pilot -270
oh yeah...........a few cheap VG's.

How about your climb rate, if you know it. Will measure mine next time out.

Howard,

My FS II cruises comfortably at about 57 mph, straight & level, no wind. That requires about 5400 rpm. I've never tried to go all out top speed wide open yet except taking off. It stalls at 36 mph. I've seen 65 mph airspeed with a 37 mph gps ground speed, and I've seen 55 mph airspeed with 85 mph gps groundspeed, depends on the wind. I've heard a lot of claims of much faster airspeeds speeds and much lower rpms, but that's the straight bull on mine.

My plane weighs 440 empty, no fuel, I weigh 210. It has the 503 DCDI, 3 blade IVO prop 66". I would like to cut weight on it, but there's nothing I want to take off. I'm pretty darn happy with it just the way it is.

Jim,
my Firestar,419# 503dcdi ivo3 6100rpm on takeoff would fly 70 mph (at)5700.Try winding up that IVO a little.On take off,initial rpm was below 6000 but within 3or 4 seconds was above 6000.You will have to tune the carbs to get 1100-1150 egts at cruise. but it will go faster than you are currently seeing with a little tweaking.

Since I took off a blade ( IVO 66" )

My cruise at 5900 is 65 + -

Climb out is fine...

My Best Ground speed so far is 106 MPH

My Best Ground speed so far is 106 MPH

recorded by my garmin 196, so far is 138.5 MPH..

should have pushed the nose over and hit 150,,, what was I thinking?

Well, I did, and what a difference it made. #1, this is all new stuff to me, learning as I go, don't know #$%# about it. I dialed up the prop adjuster screw a couple of turns and went out for a flight. I turned it the wrong way, found that out by taking off and watching the rpms race to over 6800, flew around and landed, barely maintaining 50 mph. Back to the hanger and went the other way with the screw. Took off again and the rpms were 5950 to 6050 range on climb out, then went to maybe 6150-6200 at full throttle when I leveled off.

I flew down to Bailes Field in Angleton, about 20 miles away, and immediately it was obvious this was a good change. My airspeed was 65 -70, at about 5500-5700 rpm, and was 60 plus even down to around 5000-5200 rpm. I felt like I got a new plane! It has never cruised at these speeds. Tried a few steep climbs, would hit 6150 rpm at FT with 700' per minute rate. I've never been able to cruise my plane in the 4700-5000 rpm range before, it just simply wouldn't maintain altitude. It does now, easily. A 10 mph increase makes a really big difference in the feel of this plane, and I already loved it. Even coming in on approach, I now have to chop more power to get to 50 mph. I didn't have time to really put it to the test and make all the proper notes as to egt's, cht's, etc., that will be my weekend project. I know 65-70 mph airspeeds are not fast, but in this plane it feels like I'm in a rocket! Gary, thanks for the advice.

Hi Jimmy,
You should probably take a "pinch" of bite outa yer prop...

Straight and level flight with full throttle should hit 6500...( got VSI ? )

You'll still see your faster cruise....

but you'll also have better climb out...

so when I make adjustments to pitch ,

Actually, I did just that this morning, took some pitch back out. My WOT rpms are about 6300. That pitch change increased the egt temps up to 1040 - 1070 range, as they were in the mid 900's. I will keep it there for a few more flights and watch the temps as the weather warms up. And yes, I do have a vertical speed indicator, on the EIS and the GPS. The increased change in cruise speed is really nice.

With regard to which way to adjust the prop, I'll never forget that after going the wrong way the first time. A while back, I also learned the hard way about which way to adjust the elevator trim..... Thanks for the input.
