IMO much of the pucker factor in Xwind landings comes after the wheels
are on the ground. If you transition to putting the tailwheel down
quickly (thinking the hard part is over), the wing angle has increased
quickly and you gotta be ready with a lot of aileron for the wind that
will catch under the upwind wing, not to mention have your happy feet
ready to keep it from weather-vaning (leading to ground looping).
Here's a recent good video showing the big boys can have the same problem.

Ben,

If it had been a high wing Kolb, he could have side slipped it on down and
planted the up wind wheel and kept it straight. If you can keep a Kolb
locked on the center line in a crosswind with a side slip, the landing is a
non event. If you can't keep it on the center line, it is time to make a
straight into the wind landing on a taxiway and hope someone is there to
wing walk you to some safe area.

With a low wing and tricycle gear, he had to crab into the wind to keep
close to the center line and at the last second straighten it out and get
the up wind wing down. Too much to do with too little time to get it done.
They were lucky he got it back off. The Kolb has the advantage that it does
not have much fuselage aft of the main wheels to weather vane.
