That was indeed a workout. I agree with the other members that he should not have attempted it. As a retired captain for a major US carrier and retired Naval aviator, I too have had my workouts in strong crosswinds although not of this magnitude which I personally would not attempt (although in Cancun one night it was almost that bad)
I always used the crab and at the last moment the rudder to align the aircraft. You have to get the upwind wing down or you will be wandering all over the runway. Now Boeing wants you to land flat in a crab (like an Ercoupe)as one of the other members mentioned so as not to hit an engine nacelle,wingtip,etc AND a swept wing does act differently. However, the top rudder method worked well for me and I found I could gauge the wind better. I have had times where I had absolute full aileron deflection and thank god for taildragger training and the rudder!
The captain on that carrier did a nice save and it is really easy to "Monday morning quarterback" when you are not there. I know he used all his skills.(and wishes he didn't need to)
