It seems to me the Lightning could give this record a run for it's money

The ink wasn't even dry on the National Aeronautic Association's newest category for aviation records before a Husky pilot in Indiana took off to try for the top spot. The new category, "Aeroplane Efficiency," officially went on the books March 1, and that same day, Kris Maynard departed Sheridan, Ind., in hot pursuit. Hot pursuit may be overstating it though, since Maynard said his speed over the 654-nm course averaged about 65 knots. His fuel efficiency worked out to an impressive 23.43 miles per gallon (13.71 km/kg), by Maynard's so-far-unofficial calculations. He said he was thrilled with his results and hoped his attempt would encourage others to enter the competition. "This flight exceeded my expectations by more than 1 km/kg," he said. "I am fully convinced that there is no other production aircraft in the world today that can achieve such efficiency. When my record falls -- and I know it will -- it will be to an Experimental." That sounds like a challenge

I dont know whats the big deal with 23 mph. I go from D38 to B16 in my Jabiru 2200 powered kitfox and back on 2.3 gallons. Its a 72 mile round trip at 75mph at 2250 rpm. Thats 31.3 miles per gallon. Tex

This should be easy to beat by a Lightning. At the advertised 175 MPH at 5.5 GPH on the web site the rate is 31.8 mpg (which stomps most cars). At 165 mph it drops to 30.0, and even at 150 the rate is still 27.3 - - AND (great big AND) - - this is not even reducing the fuel burn rate for reduced speed.

Of course this is not correcting for ground miles vs. air miles, altitude, temperature, and all that mystical stuff. It shouldn't be all that different at the altitudes we fly.

I hope some lucky owner will go out and throw down a real record to be beat. Put some wheel pants on and go get em Earl.

Does anyone know what the specific rules are for the new NAA's "Aeroplane Efficiency" category? Is it just MPG or do you have to carry some specific weight or some % or gross weight, or do you have to fly some specific distance, or a combination of above? If it is just MPG, yes the numbers quoted would be easy to beat. I have averaged over 30 mpg on most of my extended cross countries. I can just imagine what some motor glider could achieve. So there must be more to this new category than just MPG.

Hey Nick,

But will it go 175 mph, and go vertical?

I am looking at one also. They handle like a Lightning. Did you get the S-model?

Nick,
The Mini Cooper S is the turbocharged one too isn't it? I just bought a 2007 Ford Escape, and I'm getting 27mpg in the city. Wish
I could have afforded the hybrid though. 90 miles round trip to work in city traffic, yikes! Brian W.

I got both of you beat...how about 145 miles of commuting to and from our nations Capital each and every day.
Four + hours !
The + depends on how bad the traffic is backed up on the DC beltway, or on the mighty 301....
Sure wish I had an autopilot-for my car!

Rick,
I keep looking for those flying cars that they promised 50 to 60 years ago, sure would be nice. I understand that the technology does exist for cars to have autopilot now, but you'd need whole cities retrofitted for it. Then how do you deal with a mixture of vehicles that are all manual and if you have a wreck when two vehicles are on autopilot, who's insurance pays? Darn! Brian W.

1.5 miles for my wife, still in city traffic can take 30 minutes to an hour if it's during rush hour!  Tiny streets and lots of flooding issues don't help it.  Still, I'd gladly trade.

Four + hours !
The + depends on how bad the traffic is backed up on the DC beltway, or on the mighty 301....
Sure wish I had an autopilot-for my car!

Come on Rick. You've got an airplane and a grass strip..... There's Suburban Airport, College Park, Potomac Airfield, and Hyde Executive(?). Just keep a beater at the airport and drive in from there. Don't let the ADIZ or FRZ deter you!!

All in fun!

Have a great day!

Hey Nick: You told me that Mini was Dana's. Was that just so she would do the mechanic work?
