That is a very good question, Noel. I have actually had the tailwheel spring break while landing on a sod field, which wasn’t pretty, as the springs went right through the rudder. But, that pales by comparison with what would happen if the spring broke while trailering at highway speed! I hadn’t considered that possibility! Any suggestions??

I posted this picture last week, but I'll post it again and point something out on it that maybe wasn't noticed.
On the trailer that I got with my B model Avid, if you look just ahead of the tailwheel a bit you see
a steel strap about 3' wide. There are actually two of them, one on each side of the channel that
the tailwheel rolls on. The straps are hinged at the bottom, when you flip them up and lift the plane
about 1', you can run a bolt through the fusaloge and both straps. I think the Kitfoxes had the same
setup, where you could pull the plane backwards with a hitch that hooked onto the sides near the
rear of the fusaloge. There are two tubes welded into the fusaloge that go crossways through it
and the hitch bolted to them. The straps on my trailer hook to the rear hitch attach point. It takes
the weight off the tailwheel and holds the tail in place at the same time. It works for me, although I didn't
build it or take credit for the idea. Jim Chuk Mn

Support the plane under the attach point for the tail wheel while on the trailer. You can also put a lanyard over the fuse. I saw in one post today where someone actually used the rods for the tow bar to support his tail.

Actually the best thing to add to a trailer, is a remote controlled tail
turret with twin .50 caliber machine guns for tailgaiting "gee, I never
saw an airplane on the road before" gawkers.

Jim & Lucy, Thanks for the towbar discription on how to hook it to the plane. I saw the pictures of the bars, but didn't see how you could attach it to the plane. Now I understand and will build one for my plane. The airport is 12 miles away. Thanks again.

I simply went to the auto parts store and got the heaviest pair of gas struts I could find. The struts need to have fittings on the top and bottom that will take bolts or can be modified to be bolted.
The uprights are 4" channel. I cut slots in the top of the uprights corresponding to the stroke of the struts. Took a washer and a 1" or so long chromoly tube bushing (with an ID the same as the OD of the rod that goes through the tow bracket), welded the washer to the bushing then cut a hole in the top of the gas strut fitting that would allow the bushing to slip in. You end up with the bottom of the struts bolted to the uprights and the top able to slide up and down in the slots.
The uprights pivot down horizontal on the trailer. After I load the plane, I pivot the uprights vertical, slid the tow bracket rod through one strut/upright, through the fuselage, then through the other side upright/strut, and secure it with a nut on the end. Works good.
I didn't feel I needed to remove all the weight off the tailspring, but I wanted to take the shock out and have the tail secured just in case something did ever happen to the tailspring.
Those other padded uprights keep the base of the rudder from flexing in the wind...

Ted, Thanks again for the reply and explaination. It took both, but now I understand exactly what you did. Is that a Maule solid rubber tail wheel? I am replacing the solid aluminum "spring" mount with a 3 leaf spring from Kitfox. I have the solid rubber Maule wheel and am going to replace it with something softer.

No prob Pat. Those photos were taken a couple of yrs ago before I installed the softer homebuilders special tailwheel. I flew the hard Maule for yrs, and it was fine -- just solid -- but I've really liked the homebuilder wheel the last couple of yrs.

Ted, Thanks. You are the 2nd one to recommend the Homebuilder tail wheel. I guess that is the one I'll use. Price is right and it is reported to be much softer than the Maule.
