When I first saw this program must have been close to the end of the series
around 1959. What is the twin with the radials?? Reminds me of a beech 18,
smaller with a single rudder.

A short while ago one of the channels on satellite offered all westerns.
There were some really great shows from my childhood, which I had no problem
in watching again. Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman, Wanted Dead Or alive
with Steve McQueen, Hopalong Cassidy and my favourite... The Lone Ranger
with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. Sure they are a bit hookey but
fifty years later I still get a thrill to hear" Hi-Yo silver Away!!!"
Watched 7 episodes of Sky king tonight... They're great.

Dear Noel Loveys,
The first airplane they used for Sky King, the one you refer, is a Cessna T-50, referred to as the Bamboo Bomber. Later they used the Cessna 310.
A friend of mine, Norm Rignier, now departed, leased his T-50 for some of the Sky King episodes. By the by, I thought Norm looked alot like Dana Andrews.
Regards,
Jack
PS. thanks for the info on the Rotax electrical power.

Thanks Jack.
By the time they got around to using the 310 sometime in 58 as far as I can
make out by the copy right on the films, Which was by the way issued to
accompany so is not expired. They must have gotten big enough audience for
the plane to be mentioned in the credits.
I also noticed that some of the landing sequences in the first few years
programming were used in several shows. The rocks that Sky fell off was
also the rock that he in another episode chased a fellow off. Also the mine
was used in at least two episodes one having to do with gold the other was
uranium. All that aside for a program in the rank infancy of television it
is fantastic. Too bad the producers of today's programs don't have a look
at a few of these older shows to see what made them good and try to
recapture the essence instead of just blowing it up.

This just may be the best discovery I have ever had on the world wide web! I have bee watching SkyKing all evening and I thank you so much for sharing this find.
As a very young boy I never missed Sky-King on the tube...and I think the one of the Highlites of my adult life was just a few years ago, at OshKosh, as I was walking thru the Cessna parking area, I came upon an elegant old woman sitting in front of a show quality 310 with SongBird on the nose and the ranch's logo on the fuse.... As I have seen many 310s with this name on them I almost walked by, but then , as I approached the center of the parking spot, I looked at the Lady, with a card table and autographed photos of a much younger her there, along with other memorabilia, and a realized I was looking right into the eyes of Penny. She was as elegant as they come, and the smile told me right away she was real thing....my first "TV Love"...sitting right here and patronizing all us old dreamers.. I had a great chat with her and valued this interview right up there with talks with Bob Hoover, Chuck Yeager, The Rutan bros.. and other OshKosh regulars. I don't know if she still does this, as I have never seen her there since, but I still walk the Cessna parking area every year..hoping for a glance at that smile.

Hi Don and Noel,
I guess I remember watching the reruns since I saw them in the early 60's.
I really enjoyed them too, along with watching The Roy Rogers, Dale Evans Show, and Marx the Magic Man on Saturdays. That's when I remember we only had 3 or 4 channels to choose from. Then after watching those shows early on Saturdays, it was outside for the rest of the day.
I now live in Victorville, which is right next to Apple Valley, where many of the Sky King stories were centered. The old Apple Valley Airport is no more, but for a long time you could still make out the building locations and drive on the old crumbling asphalt of the runway. The Apple Valley Inn still exists, which was just across Hwy 18 from the old airport. I'm glad to hear Noel got
to meet "Penny". It's neat to meet some of our old heroes and heroines.
In the 80's I used to go to the same family doctor as Roy Rogers did, and one day met him in the hallway with my younger children. What a nice man. I'll never forget that.
Happy Flying!

Rudderdancer,
I work for folks from Apple Valley who still have business and homes
there (Jess Ranch). They lived near Roy Rogers and were friends. My job
with them is part time innkeeping in Cripple Creek, CO. This Inn has a
Roy Rogers suite and I'm surprised how many visitors we get who comment
on how much they liked the character. I too remember watching those
shows as a child and think about the influences they had on me. I'll
have to find time to watch some again on that site.
If anyone finds themselves in Cripple Creek someday please drop by for
a free tour of the Carr Manor (carrmanor.com). I can offer a special
price for friends if you decide to stay the night. I'm not there all the
time so contact me for arrangements.

It wasn't me but I'd sure jump at the chance.
You mentioned two or three channels. When I was 2 my folks moved to
Glasgow.. 1 Channel B&W-BBC. When I was 7 I returned to Newfoundland
where we had 1 channel B&W-CBC programming on a private station. When I was
ten or eleven we got a second B&W station B&W owned and operated by the CBC.
The private station went with private programming B&W. I was thirteen
before seeing a colour television picture... The Rose bowl parade. We still
only have two local television stations. Thank NASA for satellite!

Hi Rex and Noel,
First, thanks for the offer Rex. Next time we head east that direction, I'll try to give a call and make a stop, especially to get a peek at your plane.
Noel, only one channel, wow. When I was growing up in Louisiana, the tv antenna was bolted to the porch and roof. We'd go out to re-point it toward the station we were trying to watch. Now days, with a hundred plus satellite channels sometimes it's still boring. The more things change ....

Jack

Rex, Noel and Jack,
My grandmother moved in with us when I was 12 yrs old and bought our 1st TV in 1955. We lived just outside Peoria, IL. I think we had 1 channel and the 2nd one came in either just after or just before we got the TV. The channels signed off at midnight and posted a "test pattern". Now that I think about it, the test pattern had as much content as alot of the current shows. So I guess we had 24 hour TV service. And, back then the "news" programing actually tried to report news rather than construct it. Sorry, this is not really Kitfox related so, Do not archive.

The local channel from Lansing, Mich. also played "High Flight"
before signing off....I wonder if that's what started it all in this

Hi Lynn,
I know we're not suppose to continue the Sky King thread, but your mention of the "High Flight" sign-off, which was cool, especially with the various fighters of previous years, caused an idea to form. How about a "Low Flight" sign-off with a Kitfox? (with apologies to John Magee)
Woah! I have skipped the dusty roads of earth
And danced the treetops on lightly-silvered wings;
Cloudward I've climbed, and joined the winging birds
below sun-split clouds - and done a few things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
Low in the sunlit pastures. Hov'ring there
I've chased the mooing cow along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up and down the fields, rivers, lakes,
I've topped the windswept bushes with easy grace
Where every lark, or even sparrow flew -
And, while with silent giddy mind I've trod
The low oft tresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Please put your full name in your signature so you can get

excellent "Kitfox related" post. Nice job.
