Hi all,
Been a while since I have been here, but I see things are still going
along pretty much the same Smile

I have been looking through the archives seeing if anyone has had the
same problem
and come up with a solutions to Garmins not locking onto Sats. I have
read all the threads about
dead internal batteries and selecting the options etc. I cannot believe
that the internal
memory battery is dead as this unit is not that old. It is very
frustrating to go fly and
not get a GPS lock on.

My 296 use to lock on almost immediately but now takes a long time to
find the satellites,
Some flight it well not lock on at all if it sits more than a few days
Has anyone that I read about having this problem come up with a real
solution?
It seems like everyone's problem started around the same time, could
this have been the result
of a version of upgrade? I always upgrade when Garmin notifies me one is
available.

My old Flybuddy GPS memory battery went dead after about 10 years, I
took it apart and
replaced it with one I found online. has anyone took a Garmin 296 apart?

Thanks
Jerry

I have the same issues with my 496. I concur in that it seems to have started suddenly for quite a few of us. Mine started this past July. Has anyone contacted Garmin and gotten a reasonable answer? I plan to visit with them when I attend SNF next month.

I just got my 396 back from Garmin after they confirmed my real time clock battery was the problem. They wound up giving me an exchange unit. One of the hoops I had to jump thru was a master reset. In reading about that procedure it appears there are cases of memory corruption that mimic the battery problem and are fixed by th reset.

The master reset procedure is complex and will flush all your user waypoints and routes so you should do a backup using Mapsource or other. I Googled for the proc b ut someone may have it handy. It may differ slightly for the 296 vs 396. Garmin complained that these lists make it sound like the batt is a huge problem when it is really rare. They'll take care of it if it is but can walk you thru other steps to fix or confirm it.

Regards,
Greg

Hi Jerry,

I had similar symptoms with my 296, but mine turned out to be the antenna. Bad shield splice by builder, Me. Took same apart, went to Knuckolls site for how to do it right, and now working better than ever.

Jerry:

That's not the case here. Those of us experiencing this problem, it is the unit losing the time/date, not a signal problem. When the unit does not properly store the date, it does not know where to look for the satellites when its next turned on, therefor it is "lost" for a long time until it figures out where it is and updates the clock. Then the unit works fine until the next time its shut off for any length of time.

Its definitely an internal clock issue and not an antenna issue. The problem is this: is it a software issue, or a battery issue? Most of the problems are being experienced by relatively new units, and all within the last year. Seems like there must be a Garmin common problem, and thus a Garmin "fix"?

I was the first to comment on this, and mine's not a new unit. Perhaps 5 years old now. I last flew on 3/3, then went again yesterday and the unit thought the date was 3/11, so the thing seems to wander off into the weeds after a week of inactivity. Fixes itself rather promptly if the new location, automatic detect menu features are stepped through, otherwise it gives up trying to find a fix after a few m inutes and asks if I want to start simulator mode.

I've had the same problem with my 4-year old Garmin 296 being unable to lock onto satellites after loosing its internal date. I think its a dead battery problem because the battery looses about 20% of its charge overnight. I just ordered a new battery from www.batteriesamerica.com for $59 plus $11 shipping. Garmin supposedly now has the part number 010-10517-01 as a replacement for the original 011-00955-00 unit. The replacement part has a larger capacity rating. The replacement unit is the same for the 396 and 496.

Wow, that was foresite on Garmin's part. Building it even before the first GPS satelite went up!

Problem is, that you never know there is a problem until it is too late.

Early in my flying career I was doing a cross country and borrowed my friends new-fangled GPS, - a garmin 95. The database was a little over a year old and I figured that not much could have changed.

The problem is that they had moved the Denver airport, and it never occured to me that the database was using the old airport and class B. I remenber cruising on into Boulder at night thinking "Boy, look at all those airliners lined up. Sure seems like I am flying right through the middle of the final approach. GPS says I am outside class B though, so I'm OK." ....

Name withheld to protect the guilty. Smile

Does not the 296 have an internal memory battery? Are you talking about
the battery that powers the GPS, I understand it is the internal memory
battery that
is causing the problems?

I changed the main battery and the problem is still there. If I do not fly the plane for several days, the unit stops tracking the date/time. Now the question is: Is it possible to change the "time" battery without sending it to Garmin?

Call Garmin first and let them take you through the troubleshooting steps.
There is a memory corruption issue that causes the same symptoms. If they
can confirm the real time clock battery really is bad, they might replace
it.
