After takeoff this morning, and while climbing out my 582 had two momentary engine surges. If I had a belt drive I would have thought the belt slipped. Any thoughts on what may have caused this. thanks

Don, The rotax gear boxes have several service letters/bulletins issued to prevent the cone that connects the crank shaft to the gears from slipping. Those people that have experienced this report that that the engine seemed to be surging or slipping. Go to the Rotax owners web site and you can pull up all the bullitens/letters pertinent to your engine. I will bet your paycheck that you will find the answer here.

Engine surge could also be caused by a momentary air leak around the carbs leading to lean mixture.

Don,
I had that happen to me during a full-power run-up of the 582 while on the ground. Engine was 12 years old with about 10 hours then. It screamed like a banshee, red-lined the tach and scared the bejeezus outta me. And I was on the ground! Checked out the archives and Rotax materials as Tom suggests and sure enough, there it was. Gearbox came off, went out to LEAF for the mod and about $500 later, no more problem.

Thanks for this information. I have a similar situation with the age of
my 582. It's been sitting for about 10 years with 20.5 on the Hobbs. I
was planning on having it rebuilt and all updates done before I test ran
it the first time. That sounds even more like the best idea now.
