|
|
All,
Can a starter short a battery? This happened on my Ford van
and now I think it's happened to my Rotax 582. (Battery appears OK,
no start, battery stone dead. How did I know the starter failed on
the Ford Van? Easy, first I replaced the batteries, it wouldn't
start, then I replaced the starter. The starter fixed it.)
Today upon start the Rotax starter engaged for maybe 1/2
second then died. Upon an attempted re-start all I got was a weak
solenoid click and the battery was down to 9.7 volts. As of Saturday
afternoon the battery was 13 volts and I had left nothing on since
then. (I do not know the voltage when I tried to start, but it was
definitely not 9.7 volts as the 1/2 engagement was much more
energetic than the subsequent clicks.) I have been fighting a cold
engine weak start for the past few months, assuming it was ground
issues. I had reworked the ground system and replaced the battery to no avail.
First, what fails in the starter to dead short the battery?
Is there any way to diagnose the starter before I remove it?
(Resistance checks, etc.) Can I rebuild the starter? Finally, anybody
know if a 912 starter will work on the 582? (I'm interested in the
Sky-Tec starter.)
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan

Guy: The short answer is yes. What can happen is the armature bushings wear
out and allow the brushes to short through the armature itself. Shorting
any storage battery can be downright dangerous the batteries can gas at a
tremendous rate and have actually exploded. Not a good place to be in the
path of spraying H2SO4!
When you test a battery it should be under a load condition... It is more
than possible that a partially discharged or damaged battery will in a
sitting state read around 13 volts and with a slight load in seconds drop to
below 9V. Most garages have the battery testers to test batteries under
load. If you have a friend who is a mechanic he may be able to borrow the
tester for an hour or so and test your battery for you. Testers are a
little on the expensive side but if you do get one be sure to read ALL the
instructions before using it.

Thanks Noel, I'm looking into it. Considering how many batteries I go
through in cars, aircraft, and RV's it might be a good investment.

If you are going through a lot of batteries you may want to investigate a
Pulse battery conditioner. Storage batteries can lose cells for many
reasons... overcharging freezing while under charged... Freezing in arctic
conditions, I met farmers out in Manitoba who take the batteries out of
their equipment every night in the winter.

I read somewhere of a unit that you attach to your battery It takes a small
current form the battery to charge a capacitor then dumps the charge from
the capacitor back into the battery. This keeps a battery from sulphating.
It has been described to me like a charger that uses the battery's own power
to charge itself
There are also schematics you can get off the net to build a pulse generator
to add to your simple battery charger.

I've got two of these. One AC and one solar. Unfortunately the solar
panel was dead out of the box so I'm waiting for a replacement.
