Gill, Brian, and List,

I had Bill Blackwell install bladder tanks on my Nanchang (formerly Jeff Linebaugh's) over two years ago. M14-P engine. No new fuel gauges. Right now the old gauges have to burn down to 60 litres before they start indicating, but I can calculate time/burn and live with that. Bill did mention the caution of not having too much OR too little fuel in the tanks when doing aerobatics. He was concerned that too little during certain manuvers might cause fuel starvation, but that would likely be true of any tank system wouldn't it? Thus far no problems other than an as yet unidentified tendency to burn more out of the left tank than the right. The aerobatics have been relatively tame (except when Ranger turns us inside-out in his attempts to make me an idiot-proof aerobatic pilot). I haven't spent as much time reviewing the Yak List as I used to. Any suggestions on why I might be having this tendency to burn more out of the left than right? I did have my mechanics thoroughly check out the system during its recent annual and they found nothing amiss. Playing with the vent system doesn't seem to help and I do notice a suction when I open the fuel cap to refill at times. Maybe I need to find more airports with left traffic patterns for my touch-and-gos.

Thanks guys,

Valkyrie

This problem has been with the CJ-6 since it was prototype. It is the same problem that (either A or B) model of the T-34 that has basically the same fuel system. (Hmmmm does that mean the CJ-6 a copy of the T-34?). The T-34 guys (and me too) have found that yaw trim is the problem. They can change tank feed by applying rudder trim one way or the other. Changing from standard tanks to bladder tanks with separated tanks vents didn't change the problem for me at all.

In fact, without a means to prevent fuel from flowing back out to the
other tank, having two vents can force fuel from one tank to the other
by virtue of differential vent pressure. This is why Cessnas have a
single tank vent.

(If you get a chance, go look at the evolution of the Cessna fuel
system over time. This has been an ongoing problem with any Cessna
that has a "both" fuel selector position.)

Correction to my last post. Did the proof reading AFTER I hit send --Again!

Referred, at least twice, to the Header tank non-return check valve as a vent valve. It is not.

Walt,
To me this observation makes sense. My CJ- is a 69.

Do you recollect what years you might have seen the "improved" ones on?

It looks like you did a nice grinding job. How did you do it?

This has always been a little annoying and usually the only thing that spoils a perfect flight.
