Okay group, here's a riddle of sorts for you:
What flies higher than a U-2 Habu spyplane,
Faster than an Recon SR-71 Blackbird,
Does not have wheels of wings,
Has flown for over 10 years without ever landing to refuel,
weighs over 600,000 pounds,
and has never been fully assembeled?
Oh, and finally, what does it have to do with me?

Rick,
Close! International Space Station is correct, but my wife works on the Space Shuttle. I just accepted a new job to work on a contract for the ISS! It is on the projects side and therefore a "big picture" type of a thing. We will be engineering equipment for the space station, return to the moon, and beyond! (or whatever the next administration comes up with after election time) We will also be loading and cataloging experiments. My division will be concerning health and bone and muscle loss. The coolest part though, is that I will be teaching astronauts how to use equipment and taking down critiques in order to modify existing equipment. Specific answers below:
What flies higher than a U-2 Habu spyplane ~ altitude of 250 miles
Faster than an Recon SR-71 Blackbird ~ 17,500 mph
Does not have wheels of wings ~ no need for either, but plenty of radiators and solar arrays!
Has flown for over 10 years without ever landing to refuel ~ landing is not an option, resupplied through other craft docking
weighs over 600,000 pounds ~ will weigh 925,000 pounds when fully assembeled and
and has never been fully assembeled? Finish date, 2010 hopefully!

Lynn,
Thanks for asking, things are going pretty well. Very busy time as my wife is pushing through her Life Support Certification and I am about to change jobs. We are also looking for a house and I finally finished my thesis. My current boss (about 3 levels up in management actually) stopped and talked to me and said that he leave if NASA would take him. He told me it was a great oppurtunity and that it would be the right choice and something that I could build a career around. Kind of a cool send off. How are things going for you? Seems like this is a busy time of the year for the guys at Arion and just people in general. Abnormally warm and kind of dry here right now, but things are generally well! Thanks for asking, Brian W.

Hey Brian: Sounds like you have it under control. I was glad to hear that you got your thesis finished. Did the lightning info help a lot?
I am doing well thanks. I expect to start on my lightning on the 21st, so I have lots to look forward to. I have been getting my 601 HD ready to sell (I hope someone buys it at Sun N Fun) that way I will not have to borrow so much money to build the Lightning. I should have done it last year, but felt it was going to cost too much. We only go round once, so it makes sense to get it done while I can enjoy it for a few years.

Lynn,
My thesis has went to print. The guys at Arion basically supported my project. All fuel and flight costs paid for. In addition I got a chance to borrow Nick to allow me to not have to fly and record everything myself. They also took a chance by having somebody that did not work for them basically verifying performance of their aircraft independently. I'm proud to say that it performs pretty much as is advertised. There were some interesting and a few unexpected results of the experiments. Look for the results of my experiments in a future issue of the Lightning Flash. Good luck on selling the plane. I know that it's a pretty good and popular aircraft. I'm willing to bet that you'll like the Lightning even more though! Brian W.

Rick,
Thanks! I'm like a kid in a candy store. I put in my resume almost six months ago, and they just got around to interviewing people. I'm going to love being around the space station components, various hardware for future missions, and be around astronauts. Even though I'll be only a small piece in the puzzle, kind of seems like I'll be doing something really important in the grand scheme of things. Will be nice to get back into a more scientific line of work too! How's your jet doing? Get to fly her much right now? Brian W.

Brian,
That's fantastic. I am happy for you. Next thing you know, we will be calling you a rocket scientist.
I do have to make one slight comment about your "riddle". The U-2's nickname is Dragon Lady. Habu is a call sign used by the SR- 71 Blackbirds. Next thing we know you will be briefing us on Blackswift, Aurora, and Darkstar (both Mike and November). I can now mention all those since there has already been some leak to the public.
Congratulations,
Buz

Buz,
Doh, you're right about the Habu of course. Too much going on and too little sleep to keep things straight these days. Rocket science is my next degree. I'm trying to collect as many as possible. They specifically wanted a non-engineer with a technical background. I asked why this was and the lady told me that they had tried to hire too many engineers who either 1. didn't care whether they were in the oil or aerospace industry and they needed somebody who loved aerospace (the oil guys around here make starting salaries about 40% higher than aerospace) 2. they have had problems with some of their engineers communicating and coordinating. I'm thrilled to be on the projects side of things though.
We've got a strange looking bird around here that you might not even have seen. I thought it was a dinosaur when I first saw it except that it's really loud and blowing lots of black smoke out of the engines. The NASA WB-57's. (That's a weather recon version of the RB-57) I think that it's been flying for 50 years now! I know that they have flown to White Sands and some RAF base in the UK before. Now flying out west, by some of the big military areas, the local FBO's have some "watch out for" signs. Things like QF-4's, Mig's, Preadator drones, some things shaped like hubcaps, etc. Interesting part of the world. Brian W.

Mark,
I believe that it's a type of venomous snake found somewhere in the Pacific at one of the locations that the big recon airplane
flew into. Now why they called the airplane that I don't remember. I believe that is what I read in a book that I have on the SR-71
though. Brian W.

What about Dragon Lady? Where did that come from? Only thing that I could think of was that it was a sweet handling machine,
a real lady most of the time, but on landing and/or when operating in the "coffin corner" was very unforgiving. Brian W.

The story I was told is the locals in Okinawa named it after the Habu snake that resides on their island. It's a very poisonous snake and in the past was attributed to many silent deaths on Okinawa. I guess the name just stuck.
I spent about two months total (out of a three year tour in Japan) on Okinawa. Luckily I never ran into one those snakes.
Again, that's story I was told and cannot verify it as fact. It is a fun bit of information though.
Have a great day!
Mark
