In regard to using carb cleaner for gasket checking, I decided to use another method. My family has a history of congenital pyromania- lots of unintentional fires. I had an old, cheap oxy-propane torch hanging around. I took the valve and hose from the propane cylinder and can just crack the propane open, putting the hose right near the gasket I'm checking. No accidental fires that way. If you hold the hose next to the air cleaner, you can hear if you are putting out enough propane. Any other method, keep a fire extinguisher around. You can also tape the hose to a stiff wire or dowel to get into tight places with it- no getting near hot or dangerous places.
Try switching the sending leads first, just to eliminate gauge or wire problems.
