Does anyone know if we can fly from a non-customs airfield in one Schengen country to another without problems? I am planning to fly from Southern France to Spain this summer and cannot obtain this information from either AIP.

Are you sure about that.

I think you will find that as the UK did not sign up to Schengen then all UK residents are required to clear customs when going to another country even once you are on mainland Europe.

All other European Nationals can certainly travel at will throughout mainland Europe and with that in mind you may well get away with, but I am sure the official line is that we UK people need to clear customs.

David, We have to clear at a customs airfield when we first land in any
Schengen country. Thereafter we can go freely from one Schengen country to
another stopping anywhere. It is effectively a single country for customs &
flying purposes, apart from the need to file a flight plan when crossing
any FIR boundary. Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ

Brian,

My understanding is that you must always enter the first Schengen country and did part from the last Schengen country at customs airfields when travelling from or to non-Schengen countries will start. For example, during the 2004 Europa Club Six Nations tour, we entered France from the UK at Le Touquet (a customs airfield, although customs did not take any action); later, we flew from Austria to Italy without a requirement customs, but on leaving Italy for Switzerland we had to wait while the customs formalities were completed, except for one aircraft that was able to depart without delay because they decided to go to France. You must, however, file a flight plan when crossing an international boundary. Although it is expected that people will do this in advance, it is possible to file a flight plan while airborne, as happened when a planned French internal flight to Biarritz necessitated a diversion to San Sebastian in Spain when Biarritz refused us permission to land because they were not accepting GA aircraft at the time, which their NOTAM had not made clear.

As for the rules regarding permission for permit aircraft to fly in various countries, there is an article by the Light Aircraft Association (http://www.laa.uk.com/ , go to Engineering and look for “Travelling Abroad in a Permit Aircraft” which has entries for a number of countries. For Spain it has:

"SPAIN
Direccion General de Aviacion Civil
Area de Inspeccion y Seguridad en Vuelo
Paseo de la Castellana 67, 28071 Madrid, Spain
No response to our original letter has been received from the Spanish Authority. However, in
reply to a further letter from LAA they have confirmed that all home-built and factory-built
Permit aircraft do require permission. Permission would normally be issued on receipt of copies
of Permit to Fly documents and Certificate of Insurance.
No reply to last enquiry (06/0Cool.

You will see from the introduction to the article that it is not always possible to get a reply, and that many people have travelled without seeking or obtaining permission and not had a problem.

Other members they have some more up-to-date information. It is only to be hoped that things will get a lot clearer under EASA.

Regards

Mike

Gentlemen.
2 years ago I flew my Europa from Odense, Denmark to St. Ghislain, Belgium, to test-fly another
Europa for an English buyer living in Sweden.

Years ago I received confirmations from the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, The Chech Republic,
Norway and Sweden , Switzerland and France, that home-builts with a national Certificate of Airworthiness
are welcome to the airspace of said countries without further ado.
For some reason I plum forgot to ask the Belgians, and I never thought of asking the Belgian authorities
of a special permission, let alone imagined a special fee to desecrate Belgian soil when, in blissful ignorance,
I ventured there.
And lo and behold: never heard a word of reproach, neither received a bill for my apparent misdemeanour.

You can draw your own conclusions from that.

By the way: did you know that ODA is up for sale?
-and not for any fault of her own.
Interested parties may email me, of course.

Many thanks for your collective thoughts on crossing borders between Schengen agreement states. I liked Jean Philippe Neel's the best!, so will take that as gospel. I am aware that it is necessary to get permission from the Spanish DGCA for UK Permit type aircraft and am wondering if anyone has obtained an e-mail address, as my fax machine has long since died. I have tried dgac(at)formento.es (dgac(at)formento.es) but no reply to date.

Very interesting messages. But why do we have to look at advertising for spam software? Can you folks please clean your act and get rid of this probably unintended advertising?

Regards,

Jos Okhuijsen.

ps, usually if you pay for what you use, you do not have to advertise for the product!
