Howdy friends - both old and just not introduced yet.  Chris Schuermann here.   Haven't been on the list in many a year, but hopefully there's still a few old faces around here who remember me.  Still clinging to life in Oklahoma, working 100 hour weeks, and trying to fit a little flying and fun in between large chunks of reality.

 

 Anyway, I received the following email and figured JB or someone here would be much better suited to help these folks out.

Chris!

 

 You just couldn't stay away from Commanders, could you?  Nice to see your post.   I'm lurking around here still, answering questions and offering useless advice when I can.  

 

 Am very busy, flying the Falcon 20 full time and living the lesson (again) about volunteering.   Got hip deep in the Las Vegas airspace redesign, representing Biz Av on RNAV SIDs and STARs development, am the lead on building an RNAV SID at Henderson (KHND) and got drafted into a national work group for Pilot/Controller Procedures & Phraseology.

 

 With all that, I get about 180 emails a day and do my best to keep my eye on the Twin Commander net.   There's still a few of us left and lots of new talent has risen to fill the gaps left by those who have moved on to other, lesser, aviation products.

Currently we are operating 34 Aero Commander  Aircrafts on our fleet, and we are trying to get hold of a COPY Of Structural  Repair Manual (SRM) for a 690, 680 or 500s Series.  

We are more than happy to purchase a Copy if you have one  in your organisation and please contact me with a return mail, so I could  organise necessary arrangements ASAP.   

Further more this copy DOES NOT have  to be a current updated version, as we are in the process of certifying repair  solution through local Authorities and this SRM will be serve only as a guide to  prepare Engineering Documentations.

Keith!  Great to see you're still around.  You realize that by now, you 

pretty much qualify as a "greybeard" in the aviation world   Glad to 

hear there is some new blood too.  Seems to be a dwindling supply of 

people foolish and dedicated enough to be the custodians of classic 

aircraft.  Guess I have to admit to qualifying under the "lesser 

products" crowd.   My current steed is an early  short-nose Piper 

Aztec.  May be a little short on charisma compared to a Commander, but 

I've enjoyed flying it a lot more than I expected I would and it's been 

a pleasure to own and maintain.  Nothing ever breaks on the darn thing.  

Of course, it did receive the Schuermannization process..... couldn't 

help it.  You can see a few before and after pix at:

Howdy Nico!  Good to see that you're still around too.  Are you still 

maintaining the web site?  I'll have to go look at it.  Havn't taken a 

look in years....

Yeah, long hours seem to come with small business ownership.  Strangely, 

I've become a water treatment plant guru over the last decade and now 

find myself fixing broken plants all over the midwest.  It's turned into 

a pretty lucrative business, but things only break in the middle of the 

night and they're always critical.  (people sure get grumpy when they 

have no water!)  I'd sure like to cut back on the hours, but I can't 

seem to find really great people to hire.

   Chris,First off, I am not old.  I've just been 18 several times.  Next, after looking at the Schuermannization of that sweet potato with wings, I think you would be well served by an intervention.All that incredible effort should have gone into a Commander.&nbsp  ; That would have been sane. I never thought I'd be leaping to the defense of an  Aztruck after growing up around Commanders and C-310s and C320s, etc,  but I've grown to like 'em.  They fly nice, haul a load, are  comfy, and way faster than they should be. They don't need any kind of  apology.

  

 Nice paint scheme. Old round airplanes look  good with vintage schemes. And they look dorky with pointy noses.

Hi folks. speaking of vintage paint jobs on old planes, I am planning a  return to the original paint scheme as delivered on my 1955 L26A, serial number  55-4638. I have some nice info on the positioning of paint and graphics but need  the code or mix of the blue. I am under the impression it was a factory scheme  and color. Cobalt Blue was the name. I guess Ike liked the plane as Aero Design  delivered it and said leave it as it is. Hence the first Presidential plane with  the enduring Blue and White scheme we still see today. If anyone has that info I  would appreciate the help. Interior colors too.

and show it to people if they have a Commander interest. Our Aztec is still

 I'm not sure if this helps, but the factory names for  the original paint on your 560A (L-26B) were Polar White & Baltic  Blue.

  

 As to the paint manufacturer's code or colour, I would  suggest contacting either the Wright-Patterson Museum in Dayton, Ohio or  Mr Bill Duff, at J W Duff Aircraft Co., in Denver, Colorado.

 The museum has one of the two Models 680 that Ike used  and Mr Duff restored it for them.

 It was in his yard for parting out when someone pointed  out the significance of the aircraft.

  

 I seem to recall that there was a very thin Gold trim  between the Blue & White and the tin of paint cost something like $400, with  only a very small amount actually being needed!

  

 I cannot remember if I've sent you the history of your  Commander.

 If not, let me know and I'll email it to  you.

  

 One question:

 It was built as a Model 560A, with Lycoming GO-480-D1A  engines (275hp) and Hartzell HC-83X20-2C/8433 propellers.

 However, I have reason to believe that at some stage,  probably after it was transferred from the USAF to the US Army, it was converted  to a 560A(HC), with Lycoming GO-480-G1B6 engines (295hp) and Hartzell  HC-83X20-2 propellers.

  

 From any paperwork you have, are you able to confirm  this and if so, the date the up-grade was signed-off as being  completed?

 If so, is the full designation of the propeller hub  Hartzell HC-83X20-2C?

 Also, which propeller blades were then installed? Were  they 8833-2?

I didn't have as much time to work on the website as I wanted, but, yes, I

still have the keys of the kingdom, so to speak. I started revamping the

site to include a members area where members in good standing could upload

stuff for publication, such as parts for sale or to buy, information and so

on. I still have good intentions and a vision for the site and will battle

forward to make this happen.



You know all about it; getting good people to hire is a dirty-job on its

own.

It's really amazing isn't it?!?  First time I saw an Aztec, I just 

assumed it would fly like a lumber wagon just by the way it looks but 

they really are very pleasant.  Much like Commanders, the early 

short-nosed versions fly a lot nicer too.  Lighter in pitch and a lot 

less "wobble" in bumpy air.  When I had my engines built, we upgraded to 

high compression cylinders.  I think that gives the same configuration 

(bore, stroke, compression) as the 290hp Lycs but without fuel 

injection.  Sure does like to climb with those fat wings and extra 

power.  I can count on 190-195 mph cruise under most conditions - like 

you said: faster than such a stubby airplane should be.

To be perfectly honest Keith, when I bought this airplane, I'd just 

finished several years of penniless misery paying off the huge loss 

incurred after having been raped by an unscrupulous Commander dealer and 

the last thing I ever wanted to see was another one.  This airplane was 

going to be a temporary steed bought on a budget, but I've grown to 

appreciate it a lot.  It's probably the last big restoration project 

I'll ever do - just don't have another one in me.  Besides, my wonderful 

wife loves "Pugly", so I probably wouldn't be allowed to sell it even if 

I wanted

My name is Craig Kennedy.  New here.  This thread got me laughing as I recently purchased a 65 560F.  Months of supposed maintenance and new fuel cells, with lots of pictures to show the wife on progress, I went to TN to bring the new "baby" home.  The baby is now sitting in TX, half way home, 2 engines making metal, fuel dripping, and seeping, and all the pictures are of parts being removed for overhaul.  Something makes me think the wife will not be adopting this bird any time soon!
