Recently my wife and I applied for life insurance and it was with a company that is reputable (Met Life) yet not one I would call pilot savy. The sales rep had to do quite a bit of research in order to come up with answers, however, we were approved as pilot and passenger after the whole thing was over. I thought I would put this question out to the Kitfox community as I'm sure there is a plethera of experience to draw from here, so... Has anyone ever shopped between a company that "specializes" in pilot insurance and one like I mentioned (not pilot savy) and found significant differences in policy premiums? ie...is it worth the time involved to shop?

MET LIFE will screw you in a heartbeat. They are not trustworthy!  Get  a quote off the internet. I bought a 20 year term from Jackson Life or  Transamerica ( I can't remember but my wife knows ) at age 58,($100000)   for $600 a year. The bank required it for a construction loan so I can  also deduct the premiums. Just Google Life Insurance and you can beat anything  Met has by half. Don't mean to lecture but that is my experience speaking,  Don

I've had life insurance with Mass Mutual for many years. When I got my private pilot's license at age 50, I advised our agent so that the premium could be adjusted to cover the "additional risk." The premium change was zero. I guess they must not be paying out alot of $ to widows of dead pilots.

Check AOPA also.  I think  mine was for $200K (at) about $600/yr.  Don't quote me, papers aren't in front  of me.  The wifey wanted something "just in case"

Almost everywhere I checked, they had a waiver that would not pay if I was

flying (PIC). I ended up going to Pilots Insurance Center. Just make sure that

you really do have coverage if you're the pilot! AOPA also covers the pilot.

At a certain income level/net worth- folks wind up self-insuring for recreational/experimental type aviation flying.  Occasionally in aerobatics you'll see someone have to buy a factory built and certified model and sell their Experimental Amatuer built..



For most of us- aviation exclusions are normal in insurance and you are looking for a policy that does not exclude aviation.  It also used to be easy to find a "smooth" policy for the operating insurance, but no longer- separate subject.  The EAA should be a good place to start if not then AOPA.
