You might... is it ignition noise? Things to try first are adjusting the
squelch, turning on the "ANR" function if your radio has it (my Icom does
and it helps a lot), and using resistor plugs if you aren't already.
I had to do all those things on mine, then I needed to remote the antenna
not to eliminate static but to eliminate a horrible feedback squeal when I
transmitted using my helmet mike.

First, I'd do a search of the Kolb List Archives. There is more info there
than you will ever need to get your radio to work successfully.
