David,

Your photo of John and that new Xtra has to be about the nicest photo of a plane I have ever seen.
(John ain't too shabby, either, hehe).

In my opinion, the Kolb MkIII Xtra is one of the nicest looking airplanes ever designed. I should imagine
that TNK would sell several Xtras because of the one on display. I hope they do!!!
Makes that Quicksilver in the lower right look like a piece of junk.

Hi David L:

I don't know. Wink

Think this photo was snapped during the Manufacurers Showcase. I was flying
30 mph, 45 degrees of flaps, and being very gentle with the control stick at
that very low altitude.

Did you take that photo David? Was shot from the south back to the north?
Looks like the Fly Market Tent in the background.

List
You've prolly seen this, of Oshkosh. There's a red Kolb in there,
briefly.
But be warned; this is a HUGE file. Would take about a week on dial-up.
But some great stuff in there.

Yes John, I stood against the fence in the car park in the shade of an RV and took several shots of the passing parade. Got several of the approach/landing phase mainly, some at Take Off and a couple during the slow fly past.

Here's one of your slow fly past;

David.

Just out of curiosity, and sorry if this has already been discussed, but is this new version intended for SLSA/ELSA certification? Or is it just a new version of the mark III intended for EAB like usual?

That is one kick ass looking plane....

Lucien:

This is an updated version of the MKIII Extra intended for EAB.

It has turned out to be the beginnings of a pretty good airplane. TNK is in
the process of taking some of the excess weight off the airplane.

We still have some tweaking to do.

The Morse Cables for the aileron control work well.

The 45 degrees of flaps increase the capabilites and safety of the aircraft.

Looks like cruise speed will be about like most good MKIIIs, around 85 mph.
Hard to take the Kolb out of a Kolb. Don't think we will be seeing 120 mph
any time soon.

Hopefully, I can find time to return to London before Oshkosh to do some
more work. I want to raise the nose of the X about 6 more inches to get an
idea of how much this will improve take off and landing configuration. When
I get agressive on takeoff and landing, I bump the tailwheel.

Slow speed flight is good. For those that want to hover, get a helicopter.

Bob B:

680 lbs with BRS.

A lot of weight can be saved by redesigning the fiberglass seats. This is in the plans.

There is no other equipment on board. Very basic. So if you start adding radios and other equipment, weight will head back up.

Hey John,

You recently (and again just now) mentioned the tailwheel touched when you take off and land in the new Xtra. You said you would try to "work on it" the next time you get a chance. I am curious about your adjustment appraoch.
Did you plan on raising the leading edge of the hor. stab, or did you consider shortening the tailwheel rod, or both?

Oh, BTW, nice flight report on the Xtra. You did a great plane proud.

Only when making agressive take offs and landings, at air shows. Normal
operation is ok.

Neither. I plan on stretching the main gear legs. The tailwheel hits the
ground because there is not enough altitude in the main gear to allow the
aircraft to rotate agressively on take off and land in a nice 3 point
stance.

The main gear are longer than the old ones, but still not enough for me.
