I am curious what everyones opinions is on the use/need of carb heat. My airplane has the gear but honestly it has never worked. I have never had an issue and I live in the midwest where we do have some humidity. It is there for a reason....so is it worthwhile to figure what the hell is wrong with it. I probably will but want to make sure I am not chasing my tail.
I hope everyone is well!

The single-point fuel injection system used in the Yaks and CJs (I
call it that because everyone thinks carb ice when you say
"carburetor") is not prone to icing. The fuel spray bar is downstream
from the throttle valve and feeds fuel directly into the supercharger
housing. The drop in temp from the vaporizing fuel takes place in the
supercharger housing where it is more than offset by the thermal mass
of the blower impeller and compression heating.
The real reason for having "carb heat" is to provide a source of
alternate air.

The carburetor has an operating spec of +10C to +40C. The manual calls for carb heat at anything below that range. This is not for carb ice. It is to insure that the carb itself is operating properly. The clock in the aircraft also has a temp range to insure proper operation. The clock is heated when the pitot heat is turned on.
By the way I have had two instances of carb icing. Quickly cured by applying carb heat. This on my Yak50.

David, I'd be interested in the exact meteorological conditions you were
in where you had "carb icing". Could you go into complete detail on
how it started, what it sounded like, indications, etc, followed by how
long it lasted, and how it went away when it did? Also where was the
carb temp gage when it happened?
The reason I ask is many fold.
1. I own a YAK-50 as well and have never experienced any kind of icing,
summer or winter in over 9 years now.
2. Some Russian aircraft flying our engines do not even have carb heat
systems.
3. The carburetor on the M-14 is more fuel injector than it is carb.
Meaning, it does not have a fuel bowl per se, that has fuel sucked in
from a pressure differential caused by the typical venturi. Thus,
without the venturi it also does not have the same icing issues with a
carb that does employ the venturi technique.
Supercooled moisture is a different animal....
In any case, I am very interested in hearing of your personal
experiences!

Mark
The exact meteorological conditions were outside airtemp 50F, high humidity. Also included was a prolonged low power descent. Application of carb heat cured the problem.
Thank you for your explanation of the workings of a pressure carb.

David, I am far from an expert in this matter, as exhibited by the fact
that I can not understand what happened in your particular case. Thanks
for sending me the information.
