Friends...

I opened a new thread for this subject in an attempt to remove the rhetoric from the photo contest thread, where so many of our brother and sister Kolbers are sharing their great photos of MV. (Even though I've never been to MV, I saw a photo of my FireFly there. And the previous owner Jim Hefner. Thanks...)

If people would interface with this forum in a manner that is consistent with the speed of their internet connection everyone would be a lot happier...

I don't have an IP. I snag wireless connections from wherever I can get it (broadband thief). That means my connection can very from pretty quick to painfully slow (sub-dial-up)...

When my connection is running slow, I read the copy of the Kolb List that is sent to my eMail daily... This version of the list is simple text... it contains all the data, but no photos to jam up the works... perfect for dial-up...

When my connection is fast I access the "BBS Forum Interface to the Matronics Email Lists". This interface was developed so that people can get a pretty blue border, icons for new messages and attachments, avatar photos, thumbnails of the photos, and all the messages for a thread on a single page... It's a very cool interface, but it requires the user to have a connection that is faster than dial-up...

People who post photos to the list are not being "arrogant and inconsiderate" or "rude", they are simply using the technology as it was designed to be used. To complain about it is the same as riding a bicycle on the freeway and complaining that everyone who passes is being "arrogant and inconsiderate" or "rude".

Those of us with slow connections simply have to interface with the Kolb List in a way that does not require our computers to download photos.

Peace...

I _do_ have a broadband connection, but I remember what it's like not to...
and when I'm on the road using a slow cellular connection, the emails still
come automatically. It's much preferable to have the photos come as a link
as some people do instead of embedded in the message... how is that done?

Greetings,
18 years ago I too had dial-up and also had to pay by the minute. But I didn't have to call anyone names or lecture anyone on how to send large files. All I did was set the e-mail limits to the size of the files to be downloaded and if a file was too big it was deleted before it got to my computer. Simple and saved me a lot of frustration. It doesn't take much to set the limits just need a little help from the help menu.
12 years ago when I joined this list I used to post pictures using links but with the new and improved Kolb list I don't need to do this. I do try to be considerate about posting pictures in small sizes. I am sorry about re-posting the larger size pictures, had I been thinking I should have sent them directly to JW.

If you use this Forum for what it was designed for, it works extremely well.

You can only attach 10 files to any one post. A file can't be larger than 3MB.

These are limits by the Forum software. If you can't live with them because of your computer capabilities, them you should be using the text based version of the Matronics List.

A great photo or file posted in a resolution that is to small to see any detail, is a waste of everyone's time.

And you feel free to lecture me on what is appropriate? At least I pay for my snail-mail connection! I think that is the description of "situational ethics"!

Terry,

Intention is a difficult thing to project in text...

When I referred to myself as a "broadband thief" my intentions were:

A. To poke a fun at myself, so to avoid insulting you by seeming to be pontificating from on high... (Perhaps I should ask JetPilot to compose my next submission...)

B. To avoid a longwinded explanation of why the speed of my internet connection varies so greatly.

As boring as it may seem, I am stealing bandwidth from no one.

My intentions in opening this thread were:

A. To share with others who suffer with a slow connection, the technique I use to avoid having my computer hang up while downloading unwanted photos.

B. To give courage to those who wish to post photos to the list... When complaints are raised about photos there is a chilling effect... Members not wanting to appear arrogant or inconsiderate start requesting that photos and data be sent to them "off list", depriving the rest of the members (and lurkers) of the list the chance to access potentially valuable information.

I believe the intention of this list is to freely exchange our information and experiences for the benefit of all who wish to access it. I believe that the use of thumbnails and photos is one of the finest tools we have at hand.

It was never my intent to lecture, insult or belittle you. If you feel that I have, I apologize...

I know you are an intelligent person because you drive a FireFly, the finest aircraft on this list (not looking for an argument from all those "untralight wann-a-bees" (ultra-fats) out there).

Good Luck and Aloha.

Fly Safe...
