Kolb People,

Some more pics to look at. Note on photo #11 the black line on the rough one. That represents the droop tip edge cut line. You'll also notice on photo #01 the red line representing the front curve.

To achieve a fairly simetrical set of tips, I drew a red line between them on the table. Each tip was set EXACTLY 3" back (as measured parallel to the bottom of the wing rib).
I then placed a ridged piece of aluminum plate right in the center, standing as a "wall" between them. (If you look closely in photo #01 you can see the aluminum straight-edge separating the two tips). I shaped and shaped and shaped the first one, until I was satisfied with it's profile, put it back on the table, and transferred the dimensions to the rough one. One real nice feature of using laminated foam is that the white layer lines will be the same, if you've done a good job being simetrical. (as seen in photo #02, but note the top layer is one 2" thick foam, rather than two 1" thick foam layers)

As a side by side comparison, they are as gnat's ass close as I care about.

One last thing to note, for those that have ANY intention of actually making their own droop tips. If you'll notice on those close-up photos of the Yellow Xtra that David took, the factory tips allow for the captured air to slip past the ailerons. Although these nice droop tips do appear to "catch" the air trying to escape the underside of the wing on it's outer edge (and that is good), it appears to me this style will allow that air to just exit the rear of the wing, but not affect the ailerons.

My style will be a two piece tip, where the front piece attaches to the main wing, as usual, and the rear piece attaches to the aileron, becoming an extension of the droop tip all the way to the rear of the wing. This style will insure that all the captured air a) remains under the wing, and b) all that capured air will also affect the aileron, before exiting the wing. This aileron droop tip extension will also incorporate the aileron's balance spade.

This NOT meant to be a criticism of the Kolb droop tip on the new Xtra. Their style is fine for what they wanted it to do, and they do make the plane look awesome. It definitely augments the wing's performence. I am simply pointing out that since I have to build my own, I am incorporating "additional" features. That's all.

Mike, commendations for the ambition and nice work. I'm too lazy to
make molds for just one application.
Rude and crude is my way. I wanted a fairing for that ugly radiator
sticking up front. First bang out a metal
shell. I made it just a little too snug so some amendments had to be
banged out. Then epoxy foam board
externally. File to shape. Epoxy glass externally using the hi tek
garbage bag and duct tape method.
It will take SOME bondo and sanding to finish for paint but ought to
look better than before and cut some drag.

Brother Bob,

Yeah, I gotta make some kind of radiator shroud, combination engine cowling, too.
My plan is to have it begin at the leading edge of the wing, and flair back toward the
sides of the engine. I haven't spent too much time thinking about the specifics, but I kinda know what I want....I think mine is referred to as a "nacelle". (like Uncle Craig's)

Mine will have two inlets. The usual for the radiator, and the other other one is for the air inlet for the turbo ducting. Oh, BTW, in one of my droop tip photos you can see my complete engine package sitting under my work bench. Jeesh!! I can't wait until the day I can bolt it back on, 'cause that'll mean the fuselage is finish!

Gotta get to work on those tips, adios!!
