Gen'mens,
I read with interest the byplay from Nigel and Graham, plus others
regarding the laying
of blame for ground-looping. I agree entirely with their appreciations.
Thoughts then turned to unrequested retraction of outriggers and I
leapt to the wing to
see what happens. Apparently my outrigger(s) unlock if the flaps retract
only minutely. It then
occurred to me that I may not maintain sufficient pressure on the flap
control tube to prevent
a bounce allowing the flap to bounce up and unlock the shopping-cart wheel.
Have you tried this? Is it possible? ...or am I unnecessarily
concerned - or have I taken
too much off the particular shape which controls this?

Hi Ferg

Its been a while since I fooled with outrigger mechanism, but after I fooled with mine, once down and locked, it was latched real well until you retracted flaps a lot. Flaps could be retracted well beyond what I figured could ever happen while taxing before they would allow outriggers to retract. Thus call it "hysteresis", once detente falls in place, you need to go well past that flap position the other direction to lift detente out of position. I forget the piece that needed some precision filing for the detente to fall into place, but if you file too much, then the outriggers in the up position will flop around too much. On the other hand if you don't file enough, then the detente will not fall into position. The later sounds like what you have. Note that hot and cold can move things so you best check clearance when hot and cold and allow for worst case. I am installing microswitchs to indicate if detente is fully in place. You also best not actuate mechanism without lubri
cation. Since you are fooling in this area, check as per an old service note from europa that a piece of aluminium part has proper tempering, test is to deflect, if it does not spring back, replace it. Also check Paul McAllisters report (posted) on wearing on his outriggers and his position and choice of hardware.

Good Luck

My Dad was a typewriter and mechanical adding machine repairman. Since a lot of his knowledge rubbed off, it will make understanding "why" my outrigger collapsed a lot easier!

Ferg,

Have a look at page 9-11 of the Builders Manual. In the flaps down position, there should be a gap in the OR5 slot. This allows the flap to move slightly without affecting the outrigger mechanism.
Up to now it works for me. Another thing to look at -on high time monowheels- is the wear in the outrigger pivot which allows the AN-11 bolt to catch one the side plates and prevent the outrigger to lock. This is what happened to Paul-the-Aviator last year. After Paul's mishap I checked my outriggers and found that the tip of the bolt was rubbing on the side plates on both outriggers. One solution is to shorten the bolt slightly. As shown on the Manual, you should have 2 washers under the bolt head and no washer under the nut. As an additionnal precaution, chamfer the side plates to prevent the bolt to catch.
Regards
Remi
