I have purchased a few air tools to get started on my kit: The Harbor Freight rivet puller; A Chicago Pneumatic Mini Air Drill (model 7300RQC); A Chicago Pneumatic 874 3" Air Cutoff Tool.

I need help in selecting an air compressor that will adequately run these tools... I guess that the parameters are xxx CFM at yyy PSI. I am aware that a small compressor may work fine, but cycle frequently. Larger ones are costly and could trip a 15A breaker. What is a good compromise? What are you using?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

The rivet puller, being an intermittent load, doesn't need a very big
compressor. I used a small portable compressor with an extra five
gallon tank. I could pull about a hundred rivets with the five gallon
air tank before I would need to refill it. The rivet puller was the
only air tool I used with this setup.

The cutoff tool and air drill are considered continuous loads.
Ideally, you should use a compressor that can deliver a continuous
supply of air to whichever tool has the largest demand. If the
compressor can't deliver more air than the tool uses you will have to
stop what you're doing and let the compressor catch up. Your best bet
would be a 240V compressor, it will use half the current of a 120V
unit with the same rating. If you can't get a compressor that can keep
up with the tool, get one with a large tank or get an extra tank you
can hook up to it. That will give you a longer run time before you
have to stop and recharge.

I bought mine from Sears. It is a vertical one with the compresson on top,
runs on 115 VAC and maintains about 100 pounds of pressure. I think it has
a 20 to 30 gallon tank. Got it on sale for a bit under $200.

Mike,

I bought a Kobalt air compressor from the local Lowes. It's 30 gal, 5 HP (peak) 1.6 HP (running), and delivers 5.3 SCFM(at)90psi or 6.2 SCFM(at)40psi with a max pressure of 155 psi. It even has a "Made in USA" sticker on it. The pump is cast iron and uses oil so it's pretty quiet. I paid about $350. It has never tripped the 15 amp circuit (knock on wood...) and handles drills, nibblers, etc with no trouble. But, I've only done my elevator so far and don't have many hours of use yet.

Just checked the Lowes web site and could not find the compressor but I'm certain I saw it on the shelf when I was in the store about 1 month ago. Check this RV builder for a review and pictures:
http://www.nippaero.com/compressor.php

There is a similar model made by Husky sold at Home Depot for about the same cost - that unit (or was it the Husky 60 gal?) comes highly recommended from the Van's crowd.

Regards,
Ben

I bought mine at Sears also..
The one I got is a 33 gal that was returned never
used. I was able to talk them into knocking $200 off
the price. Works great, although it is pretty noisy.

When I started building my airplane, I used a 5 gallon "pancake" compressor that I already had. It ran all the time, and after a while it would get very hot. And it was LOUD!

It was just too small for anything that I could use it for, so I threw it out before it started a fire or blew up or something...

So I bought a good one from Sears: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00919541000P?vName=Tools&keyword=compressor

Much quieter, greater capacity, ordinary 110 volt current, and still portable. I'm happy with it, and I'd buy the same one again.

Check out craigslist. I got a 45 gallon Kobalt vertical compressor for $250, I LOVE IT. I have used the craftsmtan oilless and they work and from my experiences seem to be durable ( Though I have heard reports to the contrary). I am personally a fan of the belt drive "oiled" compressors since they are quieter and run at a less annoying frequency (much deeper in pitch). I can run my compressor at night with my wife asleep and I cant even hear it in our bedroom this is a BIG plus. She sleeps, I work on the plane, it all works out..... Seriously though, take the noise into consideration. I had to run a 30 (220 Volt) amp circuit, but hey... I'm building my own plane so running another cirucuit isn't a big deal

That looks like an updated version of my 30+ year old Sears that is still going strong. I would highly recommend anyone else looking for a new compressor to consider this one. The huge vertical tank units are overkill and lack of portability is a limitation. Small compressors are really meant only for nail guns, are noisy and do not last. One warning however. Do not use extension cords, buy longer air hose instead. Also, consider wiring it for 240 volts. I used mine in an old house with 60 amp service and fuses. I needed to convert the garage fuse to a "fusetron" slow-blow type because of high starting current.
